Those alloys don't look particularly strong.

On the bright side, you could always make a hub cap out of it.

I wonder would a genuine audi rim have held up better then the replica's.

Yep, that looks like a very clean break around the rim, like what you'd see in a fatigue failure. The pothole might have finished it off, but the damage could have been a long time coming.

That can't be a previously undamaged OEM alloy.

If it was, we'd have another recall this week...

Some main roads i.e The Mallow to Killarney Road have had bad potholes since the Big Freeze and they have been poorly repaired and now those same potholes that were repaired are reemerging again. The speed limit is 100km here. Now, I hit 7 potholes in a row there recently in the same patch of road and I tried to sverve from another and nearly went off the road. It was dark and didnt see them in time. They should at least have warning signs up or something if they are not capable of repairing the roads properly. That kind of thing only happens in this country. It would be very rare in the UK or Germany. One thing for sure, next car I buy will not have alloy wheels. Whats the point having them when the roads are crap here.

But it your case, they are now responsible because they did a crap job of repairing the damage. a repair lasting a week or so is clearly not of a suitable standard so they would have to pay in that case.

    That must be some pothole!

Balljoint went, the 90's have an upside down system that can occassionally fail under rather extreme conditions....

Try driving in Gort, I feel like I'm driving across the moon when passing through there. Nothing broken yet but I can hear it's not good for the car.

Heh. My van looked like that a while ago after going over a bump .. actually it looked worse. The issue there is, that the balljoints probably were worn and the both of them popped hitting the pot-hole. Can be quite expensive.

Well. You know Galway CoCo's and NRA's solution to that. A digital sign on the N18 at Oranmore advising motorists of potholes from Clarinbridge to Gort :D They'll fix the roads in the next decade now.

I would expect to see a massive impact point on the exterior of the rim to justify it splitting in 2 like that.... Don't buy cheap wheels!

....the flaw in that theory is that as it's a tubeless rim, any previous cracking etc would have manifested itself as a 'slow puncture' over time. There was none, in this case.

...who knows, and why is that even relevant ? Why mitigate the negligence of the local authorities, just because someone drives 'Brand X' ?

have to say that those wheels look like they had a hard life before the last incident.
i see no impact mark on the outer part of the rim (lots of kerb damage though). Is there a big impact mark on the inside part of the wheel which we can not see. the inside lip will bend more easily on impact.
