does anybody know any way to locate
the runs of existing geothermal pipes
cheaply and without having to dig up ground and risk damaging the pipes?

A thermal imaging camera might show up the difference between the pipes carrying warm water and the ground.

is this something any land surveyor or building contractor might have
    or more specialised?
or available to hire at building supply outlet?

If you go in on the BER forum and have a look there. Some assessors have thermal imaging cameras to check for heat loss. They will be more knowledgable about the use of the cameras. I've seen it described somewhere that they could be used to find a leaking pipe in a concrete floor so should work in your scenario. Google "Flir"
