Removing iPod Touch apps

My nephew has an iPod touch and has spent some 30-40 quid on various rubbishy games for it since he got it. All well and good but now he's running out of room, so he wants to take them off but not delete them.

On my iTunes, I can drop into the Apps tab and move apps around, take them off, add them back on, etc. To do this, I have clicked the 'Sync Apps' button at the top of the tab. However, when I did that on his iTunes at the weekend, it gave a warning about syncing apps FROM iTunes TO the iPod, implying (to both of us anyway) that whatever apps were in iTunes would be copied to the iPod and everything else would be removed. Bit of a disconcerting message, obvs.

Thinking about it, I'm guessing that if the iPod is backed up (which happens automatically right?), then there's no issue if it does remove everything, but I didn't want to take that chance with the little fella's stuff. Any ideas?

If all he wants to do is delete certain apps, he can do that right from the iPod. Press and hold one of the app icons - they then start "shaking" and there's an "X" in the top left corner of the user-installed apps. Tapping that gives you the option to delete that app from the iPod.

As for iTunes, is the PC logged into the same account as whatever is on his iPod as well?

j-blk, he wants to remove them from teh iPod, but keep them in case he ever wants them back without paying for them again. Basically, 'move' them to iTunes and 'move' them back sometime in the future.

    Not sure what this means?

File > Transfer Purchases to initially copy everything back, then you can set up the application syncing.

He means are you signed into the same iTunes Store account on each device.

    This will work.

Don't worry, your not deleting them. Next time your syncing with iTunes, it will remember which ones you "X"ed and have them unchecked (tick in box beside name).

If he decides he wants them back again, then all he has to do is tick the box beside the name and click Sync. All 'checked' items are then transferred, unchecked ones arent.

Yeah, there's only 1 iTunes account - I don't think anybody else uses it for syncing - his dad just uses the playlist options to play music directly from iTunes.

Tks, Aidan, I'll see what happens.

Yeah, that's the way mine works, but it's that initial syncing that worried me a little. His apps tab is completely locked at the moment, it just shows all of his apps but he can't do anything with them in iTunes. I wanted some assurance that he won't lose anything once he turns on the syncing.

Ehhhh....i dont actually have my ipod with me to check....

As far as I remember, i think what your describing (being 'locked out') means that you decided not to sync any apps. again, from memory, is there another checkbox at the top of the apps tab. if this is checked then you want to sync some apps and you click which ones you want synced...if it is unchecked, then you wont sync any apps and it wont let you click on them...ie. locked out.

I could be wrong...I can check when I get home anyways :)

    See pic:
Checkbox on top...then choose each checkbox individually...
But if one on top isnt checked...you wont be able to click on any

That's exactly it, fincollins. The checkbox at the top is unchecked, but when I checked it, it gave a warning message that seemed to imply that it would sync apps FROM iTunes TO the iPod, thereby deleting any apps that weren't on iTunes

I'd say I'm over worried, but the fact that he's spent a goodly proportion of his pocket money on these things, I didn't fancy clicking the OK button, then going 'oops'

Like Fincollins confirmed, doing what I originally suggested just deletes them from the iPod - the apps will still be available in iTunes and can be synced back at any time. If he wants to just get rid of things off the iPod, it's the quickest "fix".

I still think something is wonky with the account settings. In iTunes, go to iTunes Store and look near the top right corner - if an account is signed in, it should list an email address for that account. Now, on the iPod, go to Settings => Store and see if it lists the same email address as the account used on the iPod as well. They should match.

They are linked to the account he "bought" them with - I'm pretty sure he can re-download them without paying if it came to that...
