Scanning old negatives

My father was a very keen photographer in the 50's and I have found hundreds of old negatives , all black and white and all measuring 2.25 inches x 3.5 inches. I would like to scan these on to the pc to try and identify the various people/scenes and would like to start a permanent record.
Wondering if any one has any ideas how this could be done. I have used a Canoscan 5600 to scan 35mm film and slides, but cant see how this can be used for the above.

By the sounds of things they're 6x9 medium format negatives. Are they mounted ? or in strips ? Anyway, the best bet is a mid range flatbed that's capable of scanning medium format film (also called 120, its format name). There are a bunch of threads on the main forum (do a search for film scanner), to summarise briefly the most recommended models are the canonscan 8800, or the Epson 500 or 750 (although actually, I don't know if the 500 can do 120, so check that). Ordinarily I'd recommend a scanner with digital ICE which helps with dust removal, but if you're scanning B&W exclusively it doesnt matter, doesn't work with it anyway.

They are 60mm x 90mm, all b&w , not mounted and not in strips.
Thanks for the advice, will check out the main forum.

I'll verify that the Epson Perfection V500 Photo DOES do 120. (It does it very nicely too.)

It's not a Nikon Coolscan 9000ED dedicated film scanner.. but it's also not nearly as expensive as said Nikon. (which is why I have the V500) Epson's scanning software, once you figure it out, is also very good for batch scanning.
