O2 to unlock the iPhone - any update?

Any word on whether O2 are going to unlock iPhones that were bought from them? I've a Pre-Pay 3GS that I'd like legitimately unlocked so I can update it without issue.

What do you mean with you want to update it ? You mean you want to use it on other network?

I don't think you will see O2 unlocking your phone, its not in their interest. Same reason why they will not unlock any Nokia phone you buy from them. They don't want you changing the network since they subsidised the cost of your phone.

Any update on this? From other reports I've seen, Vodafone will have the iPhone from the end of this month.

It would be nice to have it properly unlocked. I currently have a 3GS unlocked using BlackRain and it's running 3.1.2 with modem firmware version 05.11.07. And while I have been avoiding any updates, I suppose there's a slight worry in the back of my mind that if the phone needed to be restored, iTunes will probably force 3.1.3 onto it. I assume anyway...?

I really hope they do allow is to unlock them. Its so frustrating that they can in the UK and we cant.

I've been told by O2 customer services that once the Vodfone PricePlans launch, that O2 will be providing unlock codes to those who are out of contract on bill pay and who have spent over a certain amount on pre pay.. don't know how much, but basically if they've recouped cost of handset from you once Voda lanuches officially they'll unlock you ..

That sounds encouraging Anne. I wonder will it be from the 25th of March or will they wait around for a while and bring it in during April or May.

yes you are correct, but can you avoid this hassle, by clicking the Make my life easier button on the cydia home page, this will make your phone always jailbreakable - forever, you will always be able downgrade to 3.1.2, even if you have no interest in doing this, i would advise you too, if you want to sell phone in the future, doing this will make your phone far more valuable then a non jailbreakable phone on 3.1.3+ thats if future apple updates arent hacked

For Bill pay, in the UK, you don't need to be out of contract to get their phones unlocked. You're already tied into a contract so why do you have to wait until your contract has ended? They should provide the unlock codes now like any other phone on their network. Why should the iPhone customers be treated any differently?

because you get punished in this country for wanting to have a cutting edge device

Bummer, I haven't topped up once on my pre-pay account. I basically bought the phone, unlocked it the first day and have been using it on Vodafone since.

if you have done it before unknowingly, you will see this or similar at the top of your page, which is good, you will always be able downgrade to 3.1.2 and re-jailbreak

Nice one, I'll check that when I get home and have a WiFi connection. I think my Cydia possibly needs to be updated, it's been months since I used it.

So does that backup the 3.1.2 software onto the iPhone somewhere? If so, can't Apple wipe that with a new update or something?

cydia was updated yesterday evening, so do a "Complete Upgrade" when it asks, no it wont back up your 3.1.2 but your phones shsh files, it literally only takes the click of that link to make your phone safe,
apple wont sign any firmware only 3.1.3 so doing this will allow you trick your itunes into thinking its talking to apple server when infact it'll be talking to cydia in the future if you need to downgrade 3.1.3 or do a 3.1.2 restore

ya its only for 3gs, apple wont sign a downgrade on 3gs models

I loaded Cydia and updated it. I don't have a Make my life easier button but I guess I already ran it before or something as I have the following text at the top of the Cydia homepage:

"This device has SHSHs on file for iPhone OS: 3.1.2"

I assume that means if I accidentally or am forced into upgrading to 3.1.3 or later that I can get back to 3.1.2 and jailbreak and unlock my iPhone? To be honest, the unlock is all I care about. I only jailbreak it because I have to in order to unlock it to work on Vodafone.

What u need to is download the 3.1.2 firmware for your phone an if anythin goes wrong restore it to that instead of updating . Don't update it or you won't be able to unlock it till someone figures it out it's been a month now an no one looks even close to unlocking it .
There's a guide how do it properly a few threads down

I read somewhere that they reckon Apple are on a fishing expedition with 3.1.3 and thats why they are leaving it alone, not to tip their hand.

what will happen if you update to 3.1.3, you'll have obviously latest apple phone firmware, and lose jailbreak, but you will also upgrade the phones modem firmware,
with your files now stored on cydia you will always, no matter what, be able roll back to 3.1.2 and jailbreak but as of now you will lose your unlock, cos you cant roll back the modem firmware at all !! so dont run update if you value your unlock

If O2 do unlock the iPhone will we have to update to the new 3.1.3 firmware? Is anyone familiar with the procedure for unlocking an O2UK iPhone?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,382 ✭✭✭O2_Daryll

As far as I know unlocking an iPhone is a process done through iTunes. Whether this will require you to update I am unsure at this point.

Thanks Daryll. It would be nice to get an O2 reps point of view on this. Do you think O2 Ireland will ever provide unlock codes for its Irish customers?
