Does anyone have an idea of if it is possible to retrofit an OEM Audi towbar and 7 pin electrics to a 2006 Audi Q7 (the UK website states for MY2007 on, even though the car didn't change) please?

Would it be ridiculously expensive and wreck the car?

Thanks in advance, as I thought it best to have an idea before I approached a dealer.

You won't have to fit an OEM bar. Much cheaper to fit a Witter, Brinks etc. and will be fully wired. Probably a detachable version available as well.

    Where are you based?

    Towing Equipment - Dublin Naas Road Area - 01 456 6780
    Malcolms Towbars - Dublin Rathmines Area - 01 497 5713
    Murray Tow Bars - Cork Bishopstown Area - 021 454 2370

I've used all the above and not had a complaint. Also used www.miw.ie - they are in the midlands but they make their own bars. Not sure if I'd risk that on a Q7, especially if towing something heavy.

Factory option for a tow bar lists as nearly €1,400 for the current model Q7. Part usually costs that much from a main dealer than around 2-3 hours labour at €100 an hour!

If the original towbar you have came off a Q7 then no problem.

If its off an A6/A4 etc FORGET IT. Too much messing and arseing around to get it to fit. Go buy a towbar kit suited to the car.

I'm in Kilkenny but I could travel if required. Would any of those systems be compatible with the Audi electrics? I don't plan on towing trailers or caravans just a Thule towbar bike carrier but I wouldn't want the parking sensors going off all the time and need the light board to work for fear of the gardai getting cross.

    Thanks again

Appreciate the info. I wouldn't dream of not getting a proper Q7 one for the car.

As long as the towbar is designed for the Q7 any towbar manufacturer will do.

There are so many types on the market, fixed, removable, foldable etc.

Regarding the wiring, there is a very simple box of electrics that gets its main power supply for the lights of the trailer directly from the main battery.

It has 8 tiny 'sensing' wires that attach to the original wiring loom and it drains ZERO power from this loom, so if the Q7 has any fancy multi-plex wiring or any bulb-blown sensors, it will work perfectly and is 100% safe for any crazily wired car.

    Edit: One from ebay:
