26 k (eh, thousand :) Toyotas to be recalled in Ireland. Millions across Europe and the second big recall in the US now. Toyota say they can handle 1100 cars per day in their network.

    Some going...

The car in front is now in the garage.

Toyotas are about as boring a car as you can buy.

Now that their reliability is in question, why would you even go near one ?

Yet another thread on the topic. In fairness to Toyota they admitted a problem and are fixing it....

Unlike Renault with the Clio's bonnet latch (which smashes windscreens at speed), Audi with the TT's instrument pod, Opel with the faulty idler pulleys, BMW with the turbos, etc etc etc....

you could argue that at least they're owning up to the fault and taking responsability for it.

I'm reminded of consumer shows on the BBC down through the years where car manufacturers repeatedly refuse to admit inherant faults in their cars even when thousands of drivers complain.

And don't forget its a part from an American supplier that's the problem not a Japanese Toyota part.

Their reliability is hardly in question really is it  Fair play to them for sorting it responsibly. I'd sooner have an Avensis than a Bimmer with turbo issues ;)

20 minute fix according to Pat Kennys interview on RTE.

    How does this happen exactly?

latch fails, bonnet flips up into windscreen

Renault have a history of dodgy bonnet catches, the Renault 4 bonnet was designed to stay shut by airflow in the event of bonnet catch failure, which was frequent. The issue with the Clio was nothing short of scandalous, could easily create a pile up killing tens of people.

Ah I was expecting something different. I thought you ment the latch was the object breaking the windscreen.

Which would mean if the latch failed it would stay closed at speed with air flow!

They're not as good as they used to be in the golden carina/starlet/90 and 100 series cruiser and indeed before that time. When you think that manufacturing techniques will have improved then it's a pretty serious indictment.

Apparently the chairman wants them to get back their roots as a quality manufacturer and not a purely volume one.

Don't fool yourselves. The _ONLY_ reason they're doing this is to avoid lawsuits en mass in the US and then to follow here. The old if we leave the problem in the field and fix it quietly in newer models vrs the losses due to the law suits they'll get if they don't do a re-call.

That said ... fair play to Toyota.
