I am giving some serious thought to investing a pair of Oakey glasses. Have looked on a number of cycling websites including ebay but am a bit confused due to the different types and the differences in prices. I just need some advice on what are the best value and where is the best place to buy them ?

I've a pair of Flak Jackets. They've rubber bits on the nose-bridge to help keep them on your face when the going gets hot. I bought them with polarised lenses as I use them for skiing and high-altitude trekking as well as cycling - this is a more expensive option.

I used them for a long cycle in the desert in California last week and they worked well. Good for snow conditions as well.

I bought mine in the States, no idea where is best in Ireland.

I've never been a big sunglass person, in fact I never wore them until a bee hit me in the eye coming down from Djouce and I decided maybe they would be a good idea.

Got a pair of radars and they have been nothing short of fantastic. Frame is a little plasticky and has a cheap feeling about it, but the lenses are fantastic and overall pretty comfortable. You forget they are even there, which to me is what you want.

Even stayed on my face after my spill on saturday.

Have a pair of Race Jackets - find them excellent: vented lenses so they don't fog up and pretty lighweight. Downshot is they have fixed arms so they're not quite compact to pack.

Recently picked up some Flak Jackets too (polarised) - haven't used them on the bike yet but haven't any negative feedback to give, don't know how much or if they'll fog up though.

If you buy them from the UK website you can do custom everything, including free engraving.

I got some Flak Jackets from there, quick service and cheaper than Irish shops.

They are a flimsy piece of crap though.

Check out Maui Jim - best lens on the market by far IMO, but in fairness not very stylish.

There are a few stores on ebay that sell Oakleys with slight manufacturing defects, usually pretty undetectable.

Stores here that I know sell them- Eurocycles, CSS, Sunglass Hut (Stephen's Green SC), Great Outdoors, Brown Thomas.

Online will be cheaper. If you know anyone in the US, that's the cheapest place to get them.

Best value- depends on what style you want and what you are happy to pay. Some are much cheaper than others. Generally black with the standard lens is cheapest.

Got a pair of cycling sunglasses in Lidl for €7 last summer. So light, polarised and a perfectly snug fit. They have actually replaced my oakleys. They are the dogs!

i mostly use the M frames for clay pigeon shooting ,also on the bike. i like them on a windy day as the lens wraps around .

the half jackets i use for driving ,and being .but i did get the KLJ lens for them for the bike.

if i was buying new oakleys in the morning the Falk Jackets XLJ ,would be the ones.
i like the red and black.

i bid on a few pairs on e bay last week .there is always some on there.

give haggis a ring ,he might have a deal going.

I seriously ............don't get the jazz about spending yards on fancy, Lance Wore Them, Bertie Wore Them........and we're talking about people buying Designer Shades upwards of E200. Probably more!

As DV, said earlier, keeps the bugs out of your eyes. Downhill........helps your eyes.

Spend the money on the likes of good tires. Seriously!

You can buy cool shades for E10.

Guy on this site, Vets., hammered me last year in the league. Few Quid Glasses.

I wear PBK Glasses. I photographed Blorg at the finish after coming in, I assume I'st (Boards) in last years W200. What was he wearing........

    PBK Glasses.

You won't find me buying E200 or E130 glasses.

Get on your bike and ride!

    Horrific ain't they?

    These, on the other hand...

    go with everything.

    i started wearing oakley M frames .

as there are impact resistant ,the lens quality is second to none very important when trying to see a orange clay going 50mph through trees edge on at 40yards.

on the bike ,they take the glare off the road and stop your eyes getting tired.

one other factor iv noticed about cyclists ,they have to be the biggest bunch of posers going .

I've been using the same Oakley M-Frames almost daily for over 10 years now. They were certainly expensive to buy but at this stage they have worked out pretty cheap when averaged over their lifetime. I find the fit to be excellent, very comfortable and not intrusive (I particularly like the absence of frame at the sides and bottom of the lenses). Lenses are available in quite a variety of shapes and sizes so you can find ones that suit your purposes best (e.g. deeper lenses may be better for off-road riding when you have mud flying up from the front tyre), and of course you can get them in various tints and finishes too depending on light conditions, etc. The frame has stood up very well to swapping lenses around and I expect to get many more years out of them yet. They've stayed on during crashes too, due to the great fit, so they are not easy to break.

I've never tried the iridium lenses, I've always just gone for their standard lenses and found them fine. My only complaint, and it applies to all three lenses that I use, is that they steam up when I'm stopped (when cycling in particularly humid conditions). They clear pretty quickly once I get moving but it is a pain in the arse and a bit dodgy too in low light (when wearing yellow or clear lens). When out for a ride at weekends I don't tend to stop much anyway so the problem rarely arises, but my commute is riddled with traffic lights so I'm frequently stopping. A vented lens doesn't solve the problem for me. It's most likely to be due to the shape of my eyebrow ridges (substantial) and the, er, bouffant nature of my eyebrows, so others might not suffer the same problem. It's my only complaint about them but it's enough to push me towards different sunglasses if I ever replace them. So, if you are considering a pair of M-Frames ideally you should try them out first, if you know someone that can lend you theirs for a spin. Given the importance of good/comfortable fit though, you should really at least try on any pair of sunglasses before you buy them.
