replacement battery

    hi all, quick question for those who have better knowledge than meself.
    i have a Dell inspiron 9400 laptop, the original battery was reaching the end of its life so i purchsed a new one from Dell.
    i just put it there a few hours ago, and it doesnt seem to be charging at all.(checked the battery meter) the battery light is flashing orange 3 times, followed by a green. unusal as my previous battery never made that kind of flash.
    do i have to do something with the battery before it will charge?

    and follow up question.
    the adaptor on my charger is makeing a beeping sound. this isnt normal is it?

    cheek the power output and the input on your charger and battery to make sure there the some !!! if there not bring it back and show them it the worng one....
