I came across this again recently and just had to laugh. Dodgy aesthetic or what.

It was done with some friends of mine in Berlin about 4 years ago. Everything except for the drum programming and singing is me, getting my mid 90s darkwave/alternative freak on :pac:

Anyone else have anything they'd like to share with the group?

It's the kids, man, you don't understand them. The sweet tone of a Westone Strat into a POD then with a bit of Guitar Rig on top. Meat and potatoes rock'n'roll.

This might be a good point in time for you to repost the youtube link to your television debut, Paul.

You have to let it all out before the healing can begin. I was in a concept video (though I'm not too sure of what the concept was exactly) but I'm moving on now and my life is better.

thankfully its never been digitized but we were called "spellbound" (after the banshees track) and we may have made one or two appearances at "the grove" disco in the early 90's :D

boss ce-1.. what else :D i think it was actually illegal to be in a goth band without one.. i think there was also a law about having to use it ALL the time ala cocteau twins

At least you were decent enough to go for the original and best. CE-2 would also have been acceptable, CE-3 would have been pushing it and anything else would have been a violation of the 1979 UN Goth Band Charter.

also had a lovely digitech rp-10 effects board.. man the distortion on that was sweet. exactly how distortion should be, thin and crispy with absolutly no warmth.

if its not cutting your ears off then its not distortion in my books :pac:

That's cool, man. It's really good to plug in your axe and have it sound nothing like your favourite records. Warm, phat and organic have been done to death, crispy and lifeless is where its at.

Well. What I would have done - set the singer down with an acoustic guitar - got them to go over the song a few times - got rid of the gamy lyrics - focused on the chorus. (Actually - it wouldn't be going over the song 'a few times' it would be going over the song until it sounded right )

Then we might be ready for the studio.

Single tracking on the verses - Then some whaamping on the chorus

One thing you can always hear on these recordings - when the singer is doing a bit of a lyric they don't like - they hold their chest back a little - you can hear it - AT LEAST I CAN HEAR IT.

For songs to work every single word of the lyric needs to be believed. even the other musicans - if they really ****ing believe in the song it will sound so much better

I dunno, I think there are other factors that affect some singers much more than believable lyrics. I know some singers, depending on their mood/headspace, can be just ok or really excellent. I definitely heard the singer sing it much better on other occasions.

In terms of lyrics, I think they are fine for what it is, e.g. a goth/emo/metal thing. Also in terms of listenership, I couldn't imagine that there would be too many people over the age of 20 into it. I don't think that age group are particularly discerning about lyrics, so long as they are kind of angsty. The German music market is also very different to here. That kind of darkwave thing is so much more mainstream, so from that point of view it was actually quite commercial in its own way.

It got a reasonable response as well. I know the owner of some goth/darkwave club in Hamburg (with whom no one involved had any connections) heard it and invited the band up to play there. The big obstacle to that not happening was the fact that it wasn't really a band and just a project done to facilitate the making of the video. The video also won some Apple music video making competition. The director got to go to London and got a macbook and a bunch of other stuff for his trouble.

It's not really a case of believable lyrics. It's more the singer has to "believe" in the lyrics. Or believe in their singing. Singing is a lot trickier than playing a guitar or other instrument (but saying that similar principles apply). If the singer gets unnerved - their vocal chords will tighten a little. This can make it a lot trickier to get a good performance. That's why you probably heard the singer doing better versions of it before - they were comfortable.

Yeah, I know the whole Euro Goth thing. The age group who are into this kind of thing would be pretty broad (though not really the emo end - the more emotional end)

I liked it. I that kind of stuff. I'd like to hear more of your stuff, if you'd post the links.

We don't actually have any more stuff, there was just that one track. It was actually probably one of the most enjoyable band projects I worked in. It was never not enjoyable, which as you know is a rare thing.

In terms of my own stuff, I'll try and get something posted here soon.
