I'm due a Gold upgrade on my iPhone, but just wondering is it worth the €130 or so for the upgrade ?

Personally, I'd say no, it isn't. I had a first gen. iPhone and then got a 3G but skipped the 3GS, as it simply wasn't a big enough upgrade IMO.

The other thing is that a new iPhone will almost inevitably be released at some point this summer (June/July timeframe but could be awhile until it reaches Irish carriers then) so do you want to waste your upgrade on what is the almost outdated model?

    Exactly.

The "S" in 3GS is not worth a gold upgrade - but the 4th Gen might well be!

Wait until June/july, there should be a new iPhone out around then. It hasnt been announced yet but apple have released a new every year so far in july! I have a 3GS and think its great, and I do notice a considerable speed difference when I use my friends 3G. Id still wait for the new one, If half of the rumors about the next iPhone/4.0 software are true its gonna be amazing!

Other thing is that I'll be due another Gold Upgrade next Jan, by which time they should have ironed out the bugs in v4

And the 4GS will be on it's way!

I noticed no difference in connection speeds moving from 3G to 3GS, though the OS was certainly a bit quicker. The video app is the only functional enhancement I use as the "improved" camera is still crap. Oh, and the new type screen definitely stays cleaner.

Assuming you are on the same connection, there shouldnt be any speed difference in downloads.

or so i would have though

Seems 3gs is slower on wifi?

My new 3gs is a lot quicker all round than my old 3g...however....my old 3g was running a custom ispw redsn0w jailbreak and my 3gs run a tethered jailbrak from blackra1n. The blackra1n jailbreak is very fast and does not seem to interfere (apart from wifi glitches) as much with the apple os hence the whole thing is smooter and i defintely notice something happening with my screen..it's magically staying clean?

There is definitely a significant speed difference in opening web pages, I presume the 3Gs processor can render the pages faster, I sold my 3G a few weeks ago for €300, I bought if for €129, I was going to wait but wanted to maximise the 2nd hand value of the 3G before a new phone was announced and it was 2 gens old instead of 1, the 3G does seem very slow now having gotten used to the 3Gs, it does everything quicker, It's the phone the 3G should have been in fact.

The main difference is opening apps, Navigon took well over 30 secs on the 3G, it takes about 7 on the 3Gs, the 3G can't really handle the sat nav running while playing music and connected to a BT handsfree kit, everything works sluggishly, I use this combination in the car a lot and found it frustrating, the 3Gs breezes through multitasking.

The value of the 3Gs will be much higher than the 3G in the summer, probably still in the region of €500, vs the 3G dropping to €200-€250, so I now have a much better phone and when I go to upgrade to the 4G in the late summer, early autumn (if the last 2 phone launches are anything to go by).

The cost to change should be in or around €200-300, (I'm going to use the missus upgrade so It's not really an issue for me) or the same if I was changing from a 3G straight to the 4G, but I have the benefit of the better phone for the next 9-10 months too.

Thanks for the comments ppl - I bit the bullet and upgraded after all for a few reasons....

    1) My 3G was a bit battered having been dropped a few times
    2) The download speed definitely seems way faster on the 3Gs
    3) I'll be due my next upgrade next Jan and the iPhone 4 will be out & less buggy
    4) My missus has always wanted an iPhone, so she's now using my old one & I'm in the good books :D

It also gave me an opportunity to change contract at the same time & drop from Advance700 down to the 350 package AND get free calls to landlines which will save me the cost of the upgrade within three couple of months

I presume your getting this with full mobile signal
This is most likley more to do with the 3gs ability to use hsdpa at up 7.2mbps (where available) as oppossed to the orginal 3g which could use it up to 3.6

Original 3G is 384 kbps, it's HSDPA that can do either 3.6 or 7.2 Mbps depending on what the device and network supports.
