Watched Precious over the weekend, see the trailer below:

The movie is based on the book "Push" by Sapphire. A couple of things to get out of the way:

Yes Oprah Winfrey is attached (Shes not in it thankfully) but dont let that put you off.
Yes that is Mariah Carey and yes she does a good job in the part
    Yes that is Lenny Kravitz

Anyway, the film is very grim and stark. Admittedly I did expect alot worse in terms of the gloominess but it certainly didnt fall short of delivering a very depressing and hopeless scenario for Precious to be in.

Its hard to know what you get out of the film at the end. The film has the luxury of being a work of fiction, therefore it can decide its ups and downs without having to be loyal to a true story, yet it never ceases up on the misery.

The performances are strong all round but i do have some (minor) flaws with the film.

The character of Nurse John (Lenny Kravitz) seemed pointless and the least believeable aspect of the film. Although it is just a minor minor character.

    The whole
    AID plot introduction
didnt sit with me right. Granted it definitely ensured the misery and hardship would continue just when you think
the school is offering Precious some hope
This added plot didnt really add anything to the ending either way so perhaps its sole purpose was to add misery to an already miserable outcome.

My final thing with the film was the mother. Excellent performance and there was no doubt that she was an evil women, but i would have liked to see more on her, as we dont really get to see the full extend of her own abuse and the reasons for her being the way she is.

Anyway is short, its an excellent well acted and directed movie. Hard to really give you a reason to watch it though. Its not a feel good film, and its not a film that going to get you through depression, hardship or an impending apocalypse. Its a tough movie to watch, or should i say endure. I guess if i am to give a reason its for the performances.

    Anyone got any other views?
