    Hi all

My name is Rhys and I'm from the University of Nottingham Archery Club

Dublinfest students sports festival 5th-9th April is doing a trial of an archery event at this year and we're sending about 15 people over, would any of the dublin uni clubs be interested in a small archery competition of some kind? We're sending a few expereienced archers and quite a few novices. (http://www.sportsparty.co.uk/dublinfest/)

Dublinfest use a lot of UCD facilities and we'll be staying near there, has anyone from the organisation asked about using your facilities at all?

    Cheers

    Rhys

hi im elaine and im from ucd archery. we havent heard anything about this from the organisers, which may be a problem as our hall books up pretty quick. however, its possible they booked the hall themselves. we are definitely interested in shooting at the events :)

The halls should be booked, but I'll try and double check all of this asap

Who do you normally ring about hall bookings at UCD? (I'm going to be organising the archery myself as the Dublinfest organisers are quite busy)

Do you have any outdoor facilites nearby usable in april?

    My thoughts would be this:

Day 1: maybe meet up with some of your archers for a bit of practise and a chat

Day 2: some normal rounds (probably indoors) maybe a double FITA 18, or some other rounds depending on who wants to shoot etc (we'll pay for the required faces, or bring some over with us)

Day3: Individual head to head matches. Maybe some round robin pools of experienced and novice archers, with a few qualifying to some finals.

I'll let you know as soon as I find out about facilities, but if people could spread the word around the dublin uni clubs that'd be great!

    Cheers

    Rhys

I'll check today and get back to people with the situation.
UCD only has 2 indoor halls so the chances of doing a double fita are slim to none. Also as it is term time an evening event would work out best. That said we do have limited but perminant outdoor range where the most dedicated archers will be able to train! If any of the other clubs would be willing to facilitate an event I'm sure UCD could organise to get the Dublinfest archers to the venue.

Yeah I was hoping that the organisers of the event had booked facilities (and was under the impression they had, but now I'm not sure they have a clue what they are doing!)

Ok this is what I have from dublinfest:

"The UCD sports facilities I am dealing with and the woman who runs indoor facilities is Caroline. Best bet would be to just get your main archer in Dublin to confirm to Caroline that they will be wanting to take part (by going to the sports centre and asking for Caroline at the sports desk). We have the whole hall including the indoor archery area (which is part of Hall B I believe), but I know that the archery area will be being used by the university between 9-11 on the Wednesday 7th April."

Have any of you tried taking archery equipment on Irish ferries before?

Re the ferry, iirc there's a thread or two on here about it. Basically it seems a bit hit and miss, some have had problem other not.

See here for the last topic

Best bet is to call / email Irish ferries and Stena and see what they say

So I think we have the range from 10-4 on tuesday and 11-3 on wednesday. Plus you keep your tuesday evening session i believe

Can anyone check with Caroline Duggin at your sports centre that shooting at those times is ok?

Also how much would you like to charge for use of the bosses?

Whats the limited outdoor range like?

cool :) il try check tomorrow if she's there. i don't know how much it would cost for the use of the bosses, so will ask about that too. we only have 3 outdoor targets :( i think one is 20 metres, then 50 and 70 metres i believe

Bottom 16 or so archers enter the "shield"

Tournaments consists of 4 pools of 4 archers, each archer will shoot against every other archers in their pool once.

We will be using the new fita set rules.
Each end each archer shoots 3 arrows at a 3 spot face. (again 40cm). The winning archers wins the set and earns 2 points. A draw is one point each.
The first archer to reach 6 set points win (best of 5 sets)

If we get a group of decent compound archers they'll be put into their own tournament, but ours is rubbish enough to shoot against recurve archers.

OK So I'm sorry I haven't been chacking up on this lately but I've been very busy. Let me make sure that everyone knows what the situation is in regards to facilities in UCD.

Firstly, Area 7, the hall where we train is only wide enough for 4 butts.
    2. We currently have 5 butts and stands, 4 of you cannot shoot at the centre of them as they are very worn superbutt. Even some of our beginners are getting pass throughs.
    3. Almost nobody from UCD is available next week. So far I know of one person who is available and interested in competing. Next week is just not good timing as it is the 3rd last week of term and everything is falling due around this time.

I do not want to put a downer on the event, as we are in this situation and we'll try to make the best of it. I'm at a loss as to what to say or do so I think your just going to have to see how it goes and don't expect the sun moon and stars!

Yeah thats fine, the shoot offs are just so everyone gets something to do for a couple of days.

The schedule above is done around 4 bosses, elaine said some were a bit too soft for compound shooting, but I didnt realise they were that bad!

Are the stands big enough to put two bosses on one stand? At least that way only two up would be pretty soft.

If hardly anyone from UCD and DCU can come along I'll just change the number of sets from best of 3 to best of 5, spread everything out more and we'll spend more time drinking around dublin that shooting :)

Apparantly if I can organise a decent number of teams over next year DCU have and indoor range that can hold a serious number of bosses?

Given that you guys train tuesday evening(?) would no one be interested in just shooting with us on just wednesday? (people could always shoot a score in advance or on tuesday)

If we have more british universites coming over next year and a better venue, do you think you people would be up for shooting?

This the UCD lacrosse, Netball, American football and Hockey teams are all competing.

We could probably organise a better schedule for your guys too

dcu can hold 20 butts i think. our stands arent wide enough for that. timetable looks good to me:) yeah it might be good to have more involved, and a better schedule probably would encourage more to come, though it might be difficult to do as our midterm breaks are different to the other colleges, who are in when we are off, and who are off at the moment.... lucky sods!

    Hey guys,

Once the comp has been run let me know and I'll remove yer phone numbers from the posts. Its a public forum so ye might get a load of muppets ringing ye if ye leave them up.

Hope all goes (went?) well? Be sure to post results!

Would an annual British / Irish University Open be possible in the future?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15 RhysR

Yeah today was good fun, just took my number off and i have elaines in my phone now

yeah a big british irish student comp either outdoors or at dcu would be good in future.

We wouldnt have to necessarily do something like that through a tour organiser like this year and could be flexible with when we did it

So does anyone have any recomendations for an outdoor range we could use next year?

Ideally somewhere within 40 mins drive of the centre of dublin and available midweek in the day

cheers again, we all enjoyed this year and I'm hoping to attract a bunch more universities over next year!
