Jobseekers' benefit: Do I need to cancel it, or will it cancel itself?

    Hey folks,

I'm on jobseekers' benefit at the moment, but I'm going to Australia in a month, so I was wondering do I need to go to the SW office to tell them this and get it cancelled, or will it just be cancelled automatically when I stop collecting the money and stop signing on? I'll be going for a year or so.

    Thanks

    Dave

I think you'd be better off going in and telling them or ringing them, but once you stop collecting it they'll close your claim anyway.

I rang them a while ago to ask them this very question and they said just dont sign on and I"ll automatically role off the SW. No harm in ringing to double check though. Personally I wouldn"t waste the time going in and queuing up to tell them this. They"d be like "thanks...., NEXT!"

No harm in sending a letter, and some offices have online sign offs now also - under Contact Us on the www.welfare.ie home page, find your local office, and there will be a link to close your claim if its operational in your office.

    Cheers all!

Thanks Carol, didn't realise you could do it online.

This'll do it for me :)

Please read the forum charter and keep posts on topic.
The above offers nothing to the original query.

Dave enjoy the year in Australia, am jealous! Once you submit the online form they should pick it up in your local office and close your claim from the date you go abroad, and you won't end up with any overpayment that way.
