Different clubs have different methods of tracking GOY. Our club is changing from the usual way where the top 20 nett scorers in each medal or major competition are awarded merit points. The winner gets 20, runner-up gets 19, and so forth.

Now however, we're changing to a system where your nett scores themselves are whats counted for GOY, rather than merit points. Regardless of where you finish in the pack, your score is what now counts. With the previous method, it didn't matter what your score was, just where you finished. We've also moved from best 5/12 competitions, to best 7/15.

From talking to people, there's differing opinions of what impact (if any) this will have. One positive, is that previously where there were 5 of the same score, one guy could get 15 points, where as another with the same score would get 10, purely based on the back 9s. Using nett scores gets rid of this. On the negative side, on rough days, a medal winning score will, in terms of GOY, be no better than a third-in-class score in another medal on a calm, sunny day. Does this make it purely a test of who plays well in short sleeves?

All-in-all, the change doesn't really bother me, but I wouldn't mind comparing and contrasting with what other clubs do just to see.

Our club have golfer of the year over 15 competitions, with best 8 out of the 15 to count. You get points based on Standard scratch with 20 points for that, so if playing with SS at 36pts and you had 34pts you would get 18 points, and if you had 40pts you would get 24pts. It's been that way for years and seem to work ok, everybody scores each week, unless they are really really bad.

Our GOTY is pretty straight forward, there is 1 GOTY a month( so 12 in total) and the top 10 in each competition are awarded points on their finishing positions, i.e. 1st 15 points, 2nd 13 points and so on.
The only catch is the winner of majors (capt and pres prize) get 20 points for the win.
Last year I won our GOTY with 51 points with only 1 win(not a major) and going into the final weekend there was at least 6 players in the running.
