I'm going to Oz soon and I was wondering whether to bring my real certs and references or just copies. I rather not have them robbed or lost. Will prospective employers be ok with copies or want the real thing?

Always copies, in fact you don't usually need certs unless requested by employer.

I don't know what your applying for but I haven't had anyone request copies of certs. In this day and age, it should be pretty easy to verify a qualification.

If you end up needing them you could have someone back home fedex them over or somethin

a copy should be fine though

When I was applying for jobs, I needed original certs or notorised copies. The notorising is often done free here (or a small fee), so you could bring them over, get a few copies notorised then send the originals home (if you were worried about having them in Oz).

    As per the above.

Most places have a JP and after seeing the originals can stamp the copies with "certified true copy" which will be fine.

    you'll luv Oz

Really depends what sort of job you're going for. I went for a few interviews over there that would only accept originals or certified copies, so I'd bring them over and maybe get 10 copies certified by a JP somewhere (I think most post offices have a JP in them) and then send the originals home by secure post. If the worst comes to the worst and you do lose your originals it's not like your Uni etc won't give you new ones, but it will be a pain in the tits if you have to call up Ireland and get them posted out urgently if you do need them.

Would it be easy enough to get my certs notorised here in Ireland before going, in say a post office or a garda station? Thanks for the replies so far.

Have only heard of JPs (Justice of the Peace I think) since I came here and I got lots of copies of things (passport, etc. for my residency application) certified for free in my local police station. Reckon you can do the same in Ireland but, knowing Ireland, they'll prolly charge you.

If I were you I'd scan everything and anything you think you may need and e-mail it to yourself as it'll be useful to have anyway. Then you can ask companies if e-mailing them the docs will be good enough. Like you say, bringing the originals would be a pain but registered post is good and pretty fast.
