    Hi!

I would like to do a first aid course! I hear the Order of Malta provide first aid courses but I'm not sure where! What other organisations provide First Aid courses and are there age restrictions accompanying some courses?

    Thank you!:)

www.orderofmalta.ie - give the office a call and they will fill you in. You can do a basic course in your local unit or an Occupational course (covered over 3 days full time) in headquarters in ballsbridge. No age limit for basic courses as far as I'm aware (there might be an age restriction for CFR/defib training however).

Other organisations are St. John's ambulance brigade, Irish Red Cross and Civil Defence.

St.John Ambulance is currently running a course in their National HQ in Leeson Street, Dublin on Tuesday nights.

Not sure if this is of any use but give the office a call on 016688077 if it helps.

www.sja.ie or the office is open 9am to 12pm Mon-Fri , The class is open to all over 18.

    I'm 16 and in Galway(however I am a Mayo fan!:))

I have read a lot of First Aid books and watched some videos on some websites set up for First Aid. However, I'd really like to do a course to see it first hand!

    MaighEoGoDeo,
Galway Civil defence would be your most viable option, they would be fairly busy too, CD does first aid at all the big concerts such as oxegen, electric picnic. You would have to give their CDO a call to see if they are running courses, heres the info.

Irish Red Cross are the most active in Galway.

In fact the unit did 16 AS1 Emergency calls for the HSE last year......

Oh ok, it just seemed that they were fairly busy in general, flooding and first aid at ocean race yoke, galway races etc through out the year, it seemed that way anyway when reading the civildefence website , but anyways, MaighEoGoDeo, there is plenty of options available to you, so best of luck wherever you end up :D

I'm suprised at this:eek: When you say "the unit" do you mean the Galway Branch? Did they do more AS1 Calls than OMAC and Civil Defence in Co. Galway and would it be fair to say that you don't have to do any AS1 Calls to be active. I know OMAC in Tuam use to do a lot of AS1 Calls. OMAC in the city would do none and CD in the City would only be out for the floods/ice.
I would have put CD or OMAC ahead of RC in Galway

Civil Defence don't do the Galway Races. RC, CD, OMAC, HSE & Lifeline did the Volvo Boat Race.

OP >> What part of Galway are you in?
    If in the City; Ring them all and see cost/when/where they are running courses;
Civil Defence - Fire Station; 091-583396
Order of Malta - Helen St.; 091 525879
    Order of Malta - Mervue; 087 2624009
Red Cross have a few dates for 3 Day courses coming up in the Menlo Pk. Hotel:
    15/02/2010
    29/03/2010
    10/05/2010
    28/06/2010
    23/08/2010

If you are interested in joining:
Red Cross, Order of Malta & Civil Defence are all strong in Galway and have a good working together relationship. Recent years have seen new branches & units for them all around County Galway.
They all do music concerts and arts festivals
Red Cross would probably be the smallest but have loads of branches outside the city and help out each other.
The Civil Defence are huge and do a bit of everything and have some really good loyal members including the already mentioned; Casserly's.
The Order of Malta don't do as much as Civil Defence but are very strong; They have 2 Units there.
Your 4th option would be the Mountain Rescue but you might be a bit young for it. They will be recruiting soon.

If you wanted to join see where/when they all meet and see which one suits. Find out how much it will cost you to join up; including uniform.

    Are you into any sport?
    Red Cross do Galway United
OMAC do Pearse Stadium, Kick Boxing & Galway Races
Civil Defence do Car Rally & Tuam Stadium

all the vols will take you on as a volunteer and teach you, but it can take a long time to do your exams, plus you are talking about a commitment to turn up to training every week and cover events or calls, etc.

if all you want to do is a first aid course, try ringing, the vols and see if they teach non-members.
or try the VEC (vocational education collages). they run frequent courses.
in galway there is also a private ambulance college ( i don't know any thing about them) exept that they definataly run first aid courses and more,

    good luck,
:(this shouldn't be an argument about which voluntary is better, than the next.

But - CIVIL DEFENCE (especially galway city unit) are much better than all the rest combined:D
(Tom Cas is a gent and will help you as much as he can -C.D. abú)

Thank you all so much for your replies! You've all really helped me and I very much appreciate it!:)

    Just one last question!:

If I got the appropriate training, would I be able to help out a sporting events at my age? I'm very much into sport and would love to do this!

if you had the training, i don't think there would be any problems providing first aid cover at any event, age shouldn't be an issue. (once your certified).
    good luck.

Any idea how much it costs to do a basic first aid course with the order of malt and how regularly local units run them?

"Is there a minimum age requirement for the CFR course in relation to the use of a defibrillator?

There is no minimum age set out in the PHECC 2007 Education and Training Standard, however an individual should be mature enough to comprehend the knowledge, skills and implications associated with defibrillation. Currently, institutions recognised by PHECC use 16 years old as a benchmark."

    le PHECC website............www.pheccit.ie............how appropriately named
