Can't Play Some DVDs ?

    Hi,
I haven't really been renting many DVDs over the last 12 months, so maybe I'm out of touch!

I rented out The Proposal (for herself!) over the weekend and it won't play in 2 DVD players but would play in another one OK.

    It didn't work in:
Denon ADV-DM51 (bought 3 or 4 years ago)
    KISS DP588 (as above)

    It did work in:
Samsung DVD1080p7 (bought in the last 12 months for 30quid!)

Is there some new copy protection being employed by new DVDs ?

What are you supposed to do ?

Thanks - I searched here but couldn't find similar queries.

PS - it wasn't just a faulty DVD - the exact same happend with a Cars DVD the young lad got for Christmas

There is no 'new' copy protection as far as I am aware.

A region encoding problem would be the only thing that springs to mind, but that is very unlikely with a rented DVD.

I suspect a physical defect on the disc, like a scratch or scuff is the likely cause. One of the laser mechanisms was just better able to compensate than the others perhaps.

Does not the Disney DVD's use some odd dynamic disk structure, so the new movie may have changed the construction of the discs in some way that is not readable with out a frimware flash.

One such instance was the 2nd Harry Potter movie , it used a new kind of motion menu system.
