Looking a distinct likelihood now that Pirog is moonwalking away from Macklin.

Biggest Irish fight since Freddie Gilroy and Johnny Caldwell 50 years ago!! Am wrong??

Macklin only recently announced that there he was due to fight Pirog in April. Did Pirog pull out or what? I am happy to hear this as I think Pirog had a good chance of beating Macklin and the fight was all risk and no reward.

Tbh I would prefer if these two avoid each other. Whoever loses is going to take a major career blow and I'd rather they stayed apart until they become more established. I would love to see Macklin fight Sylvester. I think he would comfortably KO him. Sylvester has got to be one of the worst champions out there.

I think Lee should take on someone decent but not top class as I feel he could get hurt. I would like him to take on a club level brawler and try to learn to counter act the style that gives him so much trouble.

I know it would be awesome for Irish boxing if these two tangoed but it would be bittersweet and I'd rather they stayed apart for another year or so.

Thats a loss for andy now, hes not ready for macklins pressure style he has too many defensive frailties.Macklin should be looking for world title elminators ie Pirog and lee should work on his obvious faults. Bittersweet for sure!

The word going round is that Pirog's got himself a WBO eliminator and wants no part of Macklin.

I wouldn't really mind seeing this fight, it would unfortunately set Andy Lee's career back quite a bit. However big fights like this are needed occasionally to really get the public interested in the sport. When within the one country divided on who they want to win and who will win it creates big interest and a fight between the two could be absolutely massive.

It would be the fight to sell out The Point that many of us didn't see coming again too soon. Lee is also a well established name in America(even if he isn't held in the highest of regard, he is well known) and Macklin will need a name or too to get a fight with Pavlik if he can't get an eliminator.

Yes Sylvester would be a much better target, but there's not a hope in hell at the minute imo of the Germans allowing Macklin anyhwhere near their boy.

Macklin would destroy Lee imo. He would get through his defence from the off and would ko him within 4. Andy should go the European Title route and leave Macklin work towards a world title. If both are succesful and Andy works himself into contention for a world title then it would be massive further down the line.

This fight wont happen i was watching andys last fight just last week and at the end of fight when andy was finished being interviewed the interviewer asked joey gamache about andys next move and a potential match up with macklin and joey told the lady that its not on the cards as both fighters were heading in different directions.

Sylvester looks to have his opponent set for May:

Pirog vs Mitchell in whats said to be a wbo eliminator, the fight is Saturday coming which is a bit short notice. Surely there must have been strong talks of this fight for a few weeks?

A defence against Lee in NYC around paddys day would have been good to get a bit of a name for himself in the states, probably cant happen now though?

Pavlik seems to be tied up with Martinez/Williams, plus Duddy is a top rank fighter coming off a 1st round ko so Id imagine he would be top of the list for Irishmen to fight Pavlik for the title.

There is always Sturm but isnt there talks of him going to be trained by Freddie Roach as well?

Edit: would be great for Irish boxing to get a full house at the point!!!

Ya Karmazin is Sylvester's mandatory, and should provide an easy enough defence for the German. In his prime the Russian was quality and would of done a number on Sylvester, but he's badly faded now and will probably suffer a stoppage defeat.

Outside of that Sylvester's team are unlikely to look at Macklin anyway due to the threat he poses.

Sturm is also trained by Roach now, he's also got contractual problems with Universum who are/were his promoter. His mandatory is Gennady Golovkin, and that'll most likely be the next fight he takes. Golovkin is a Universum fighter aswell and is pretty decent. Sturm is going to have to box very, very well against the Kazahk to retain his title, because even though the crowd may be on his side and he may be the title holder, he'll still be the away fighter according to the judges in that.

Which leaves only one title holder left for Macklin and it's the biggest and baddest of them all. Yes it would be a lot easier for Top Rank to sell a Pavlik-Duddy fight than Pavlik-Macklin. But Bob's got other uses for John, and Duddy doesn't have to be matched tough to sell lots of tickets.

I get the feeling that Arum has pretty much abandoned the idea of Pavlik v Duddy unless Kelly loses anytime soon, and instead Bob would like to use Duddy to increase the profile of one of his other fighters(hence the Chavez jnr fight which won't be going ahead for a while at least). Kelly has very little to game in stature from fighting Duddy, and it's more valuable to have Pavlik and Duddy on the same card not fighting each other. Pavlik doesn't have a problem selling tickets either.

Right now I don't think Top Rank and Bob Arum are even thinking about Matthew Macklin. They might even barely now who he is. Pirog is much more likely to get his shot at the ghost soon. However Macklin's after signing with Freddie Roach, that'll get him a bit of attention in America. If he pulls of a win or two over fighters known in America things could become very different.
If he doesn't.....well he's highly ranked by almost everyone, some European title defences will make who someone's mandatory before too long.

Nah. I don't want to see this fight take place until they've both had their shot on the world stage. there'll still be huge interest from the public in seeing them fight at that stage.
