Having a look at VW Golf and Ford Focus specifically but am wondering is there much difference in the back space of those two or any other carvans?
when I say boot space, I mean the entire back space of the car
    thanks

Probably not much overall. I'd say the Focus is longer than the Golf (I'm 5ft 10 and was stretched out in the back of a Focus a couple of weeks ago), but the Golf is probably higher at the back because of the greater slope on the Focus rear window.

Depends what you are carrying as to which fits best.

If you want bootspace then the Astra is unbeatable. (for a car type van)

    they're very cheap up North.

cheers for the replies. I suppose the best idea is to go and look in the back for my self, trying to fit in dog crates mainly. The Astra is nice alright, though its long, will have to see if I can manage the parking!

    thanks

Pretty much the same body as the estate Astra I think.
