Special grants for re-training of ex-Dell workers

This is disgraceful and in my opinion is unconstitutional. Are some people "more unemployed" than others? Waterford Crystal workers are getting a special package also towards retraining. What the fcuk in going on? My partner is unemployed since the same day as the Dell workers lost their high paid jobs. She was not highly paid and she also needs retraining. She asked Fás for training under the Dell scheme and was told "That is for former Dell workers" What is happening here? Dell workers earned enough to contribute towards their re-training whereby low paid workers did not.Special deal for Groucho o'Dea? I wrote to TD's in my constituency yesterday to complain. I urge all to do likewise until we are treated equally.

I've only read about this once or twice so I'm not sure of the ins and outs but as far as I know it's a project that was launched by the EP to fund retraining of staff that were once part of a large organisation that has taken its business overseas.

So Dell qualified as an eligible company under the scheme and therefore their employees are entitled to the training. It may seem unfair, but as far as I know it is an EU wide initiative so it's just fortunate for Irish Dell employees that the EP is going to fund them for retrainting. I don't think the funding comes from the Irish Gov or Fas.

Life isn't always fair I guess.

Seems not. Would be interesting to approach some opposition TD about it.

This re-training fund is not coming from our pockets, nor is it coming from the governments or Fas's pocket, this has come from Europe to help the long term workers of Dell get on their feet again.

It may be unfortunate that this assistance is not there for every unemployed person but it is not the fault of those who used to work for Dell.

This money is only available for a ltd amount of time also, so if Fas / Government doesn't use it to get these people re-trained, then the money goes back to Europe.

Don't begrudge these people help in getting re-trained just because it's not available to others doesn't mean they shouldn't get the best they can from it.

    My 2c

Does not make it right that people who are also unemployed cannot avail of high class re-training. I have emailed almost every TD in Ireland at this stage to complain about the inequety of this scheme.I will also email all MEP's. If it is not available for all then it should not be available for any. I would like to know how this bad decision came about. If more people petitioned their TD's and MEP's maybe we can get it suspended until fair play happens. Ir was a disgraceful decision and smacks of private petitioning by Groucho as a vote getter.

I don't think it's unfair, simply a perk for working for dell like other places offer health insurance, other places offer company cars, with dell they got retraining. I don't mean to come across as derogatory, especially as I'm also looking for a job but your time emailing TD's could be better applied to expanding your own knowledge and therefor making you more employable

No it doesn't make it right, but you writing letters to TD's aint going to change that, some companies offer training some don't, some companies offer statutory redundancy, some don't, some companies pay well over minimum wage, some don't.

This training scheme is an entitlement to those who worked at Dell, nothing more, and why you think people who never worked there should be able to avail of it is beyond me. Why would you want to get this suspended, do you not think these workers are entitled to be looked after ?

This was nothing to do with Dell but it was a concession given to Dell workers by the EU. dell paid nothing towards it. Check that first before commenting.

So you'd rather nobody got a helping hand up from the EU rather than some people get a bit of benefit from being part of the EU?

Would you be as up in arms if you were getting a helping hand up but someone else wasn't?

    I doubt it somehow

EXACTLY....not for everybody, just for Dell workers. So let them have it surely!! If it's not spent the money goes back to Europe, so by delaying it as you wish to do then nobody benefits.... where's the sense in that??

Everybody is entitled to it and not the privelaged few. Equality is all I ask. Seems like a Groucho deal to me. Anyway I am too busy writing complains toTD's now. So bye

This is the 4th time i've written a reply to this as i'm sure its a windup. So if you get something you feel other people should be entitled to also, you'll stand your ground and demand everyone else gets it?

Everybody is not entitled to it, only those who worked in Dell.
Good luck with your letter writing campaign, total waste of time though. Why not get in contact with your social welfare office and ask them about any courses you can get on while still keeping your payment, only stipulation is that you have to be over 25 (Everybody is entitled to this)
