iPhone Repair - Mic works on loudspeaker only?

I have an iPhone 3G and need to get it repaired. I bought it august 08 so it's just out of warranty by a few months.

The problem is, when I call someone all they hear is a crackle, but, and this is the weird part, if I put them on loudspeaker, they can hear me. When I use the headphones with mic, the same problem is there. I was under the impression that the same mic on the handset would be used for regular conversation and loudspeaker conversations. but using the headphone jack and that not working doesn't make sense.

I'm also under no illusions that I won't have to drop it in somewhere to be repaired, but I want to know a little bit more about the underlying problem so I'm not walking into one of these places like a schmuk and handing over money.

Also, anywhere open on a sunday that do repairs around dublin city?

    Cheers

With a bit of lubk ,you might be able to resolve the problem by clearing the headphone of debris.

This looks like it is a common problem on the iphone forums ,Have a look at this post by Vibe69 ,taken fromhere.

"This has happened to me two times. The first time I by chance fixed it by putting the headphones in & taking them out unitl it happened to fix it.

HOWEVER the second time I did a little research and found this little diamond in the rough!!!!

    http://www.luckow.com/iphone/

"It turns out that the problem comes from dust/dirt randomly settling inside the headphone jack. Eventually something will get in there. When you plug your eadphones in after this happens, you are shoving the dust/dirt in there tight and sometimes it will end up in the right spot and short some connection inside there. The genius repair solution is in the above link.

This has fixed the problem for 95% of people who have had the problem & tried this fix. And both times when it happened to me was right after using some headphones with it. So I'm pretty confident this is no longer a mystery!

Unfortunately, I don't see this as being a simple thing for Apple to solve this.

PS - [about the fix] I think it might not be good to leave any of the fuzz at all when u clip it because it may get lost in there too, but I've only done this once. Let me know what you think is the better way, guys so I know for next time because it's obviously going to happen again."

"There is a switch inside the headphone jack that is pressed down by the headset when plugged in. If the switch gets dirty, it won't pop up when you remove the heaset. Since the iPhone thinks you still have a headset plugged in, it is "listening" through the headphone port for your microphone. It should still be sending the sound out through the headphone port too."
