Couldn't find a better forum for this. I ordered a package from an American site and there was nobody here to answer the door to the postman on thursday. They didn't leave any notice but I assume they left it at the post office so I can pick it up there. If I don't pick that package up quickly will they send it back to the company that posted it?

They send it back after 14 days for packages originating in europe, and 21 days for US packages i believe.

Dunno if I am missing something, but how do you know they called if they left no notice?

If the company told you this then they might be using a courier.

They always leave a note that you take to the "mail centre" (or at least that's what it's called in Galway anyway) with the details of your package on.

The USPS tracking page says "Status: Attempted Delivery Abroad, January 28, 2010, 12:00 pm, IRELAND".

Thats the problem they didn't leave a note. I live in a town and theres 1 post office here so I suppose I better ask them if they have any packages with my name on it.

Heres what the tracking page says now.

    bullet_circle.gifDelivered Abroad, February 01, 2010, 12:00 pm, IRELAND
    bullet_circle.gifAttempted Delivery Abroad, January 28, 2010, 12:00 pm, IRELAND
    bullet_circle.gifArrived Abroad, January 27, 2010, 3:06 pm, IRELAND
bullet_circle.gifInternational Dispatch, January 24, 2010, 12:33 pm, ISC SAN FRANCISCO (USPS)
    bullet_circle.gifArrival
    bullet_circle.gifAcceptance, January 19, 2010, 4:38 pm, CHIMACUM, WA 98325

If the package arrived in Ireland on the 27th what does delivered abroad mean? The package hasn't arrived at my house yet so thats not what it means.

I doubt it would have been sent back so soon, did you ring your post office yet?

My best guess is that the original "arrived abroad" was into some sorting depot, then it is sent from there to a local post office or second sorting office. I think with parcelforce and DHL I have got specific locations listed before, I can see it arriving in depots and then it is "out for dispatch". In this case you can see it "arrived" but was not delivered. If the feb 01 said "delivered abroad, san francisco" it would look like it was sent back.

I reckon you will have it soon.

Enter the tracking number here, it should work if An Post took charge of it.

This is when the package arrived in Ireland, and was accepted by An Post (or some courier company, but it should be An Post for USPS packages).

They attempted to deliver it, somewhere, and probably left a note.

It was probably collected at the sorting office, by whomever got the attempted delivery docket.

Someone has it. Either it was went to the wrong address, and they've collected it from the depot, or someone in your house took the delivery note and collected it.

The An Post site should give you a little more detail, if it shows up.

    Yeah that worked. It says
    Location: BALBRIGGAN D.S.U. CO DUBLIN

Thats my town I dunno what D.S.U. is though. I'm guessing the last entry on the USPS tracking page means the package was delivered to Balbriggan D.S.U. which is probably some kinda depot where undelivered packages are sent. Shouldn't be too hard finding this place since its in my town. Thanks.

It's probably still in the sorting depot then. You could ring An Post in the morning, and they'll tell you where that is.

You were right someone signed for it and picked it up. The lad on the phone said it was one of those squiggly signatures and couldn't make it out. They had the right address so the postman should have dropped that notice off to my house. Cost me about 80 euros that package so I'm not gonna just let it go. Especially considering whoever picked it up would have absolutely no use for it.

They told me they don't have the address of whoever picked it up. Looks like I'm fairly ****ed.

You're supposed to print your name, as well as signing, but they often don't get the recipient to do that.

You should be able to check the signature online. There's a Delivery Record Available column at the right hand side of the tracking page. If it's available then there'll be a link here.

Sorry to hear that. All I could think is either the postman is in on it (I doubt it), or somebody could have been in your garden and he gave the slip to them- at first that makes no sense as they should have had the package with them and gave it to them, BUT in other threads people did complain about lazy postmen who did not bring packages though, just the slip.

Also people complained of post hanging out the letterbox -does your postman do this? if so somebody posting bogus charity leaflets etc could have seen it and swiped it and gone and collected it.

Do not let it go, I expect all post offices should have CCTV, I am not sure about here but in the US post theft is an extremely serious crime. Also an post should be insured as it is really their fault, I have never been impressed with how lax they are, I have been handed post standing in my mates garden once, and gone in and asked for post in my name without being asked for ID before.

Yeah I'm looking at the signature right now. Take a look
    screenshotbu.png

There are some squiggly signatures below that one but this is the most recent signature and it says DELIVERED beside it. Maybe I have better eyesight than the lad on the phone but I'd say that is S. Tailor. I could check the phone book and see if there are any Tailors that live nearby (how big a mistake could the postman have made) but I don't know if thats what the signature actually says and I don't know if they gave a real name.

The local postmans fairly mad so thats not beyond the realms of possibility. On top of that I don't have a letterbox the postman just leaves the letters in the porch. Someone could have easily swiped the notice before I got to it. I just got a letter that was for a house 5 doors down from my house today so I've a feeling the postmans to blame here. If thats the case whoever signed for the package lives on my road.

I rang An Post earlier and they said they were gonna question the postman about it and try and figure out who signed and collected the package. Its not a very big town and the postman couldn't have gave that slip to someone in Cork they obviously live nearby so sooner or later I'm going to find out who collected the package. When I find them if they still have the item no harm done but if they threw it out I'm not gonna be too happy about that.

You're right it is An Posts responsibility. As you can see in the signature in my previous post they didn't even get the person to write their name in block capitals let alone ask them for ID. When I was living in Canada they wouldn't give you the package unless you had ID on you. Now I see why they have these kind of rules.

if you don't have a letter box legally you're not entitled to get mail! ( I do work for An Post by the way, just to declare an interest).
If you want to PM me I can get someone to check it out, and you are entitled to compensation should there have been an issue with the delivery.
(and DSU is Delivery Services Unit, by the way)

I better get on that then. I have a letter box but its been sealed ever since it was painted. Better chisel it open.

Case closed. My sister picked it up and didn't tell me about it until now. God I feel stupid now since the first thing everyone suggested was that a relative mighta picked it up. Anyhow thanks for help.
