I am enquiring on behalf of my sons- British citizens living here in Ireland, both are over 18.

Their UK passports have expired, and need to be renewed, but they both want to change their surname to my now married name, so as to have them issued in this new name.

What would be the quickest and/or least expensive way, as they both would like to travel shortly! I did suggest they just renew and travel, but they are adamant!

Are they looking for British or Irish passports (depending on eligibility)? Uk procedures probably have some differences

I got the spelling of my name changed a few years ago cos it was spelt wrong by the registrar when I was born. Basically (and this is so typical of Vatican-ruled Ireland) the relevant government office assumed, without asking, that I was a Catholic and said I should go to the priest (!!) and get my baptism certificate changed and they would change my (supposedly secular) State birth certificate without question.

I asked if I wasn't a Catholic, what could I do, hoping for an better option, and I was told I could only go for deed poll. I went for the easier option of getting the priest to change my baptism certificate and all was sorted very quickly.

It's probably different when it's a surname and not simply a case of spelling. And maybe as well because they are British citizens and probably don't have Irish birth certs, and being British are less likely to be born Catholic, but worth looking into to see if there are options other than deed poll.
