Has anyone done the MAcc in Smurfit?? Just a general question on how the year is. Ive heard various accounts of it being the worst year of your life and all sorts, wondering if the rumours are true??!!

Also, whats the best way to go during the summer. Minor dissitation or two modules?

    Thanks

Speaking as someone who has done the MAcc, I would say it's a tough year, not sure about "worst year of your life" though! There's a huge amount of material to get through, but the stuff isn't that hard itself. Both options are about the same amount of work so I guess the choice just depends on if you want to research or do more classes. They end up having the same word count at the end anyway.

To be honest, I wouldnt do it above other accounting masters courses given that they charge about €3,000 more than anyone else and you essentially end up learning the same information and with the same exemptions from CAP 2. If you are being sponsored by and accounting firm, you'll have to fork out the extra money by yourself aswell!

Once you have a training contract secured, your employer wont care where you are going to do you're masters. However, if you intend on doing the milk round this autumn while doing the masters, I'd say yeah, they probably do value Smurfit students above the rest, followed by DCU then probably DIT.

In relation to doing a masters course in general, I'm currently doing one and have some friends doing CAP 2s and I think its certainly much easier to get the exemptions by doing the masters courses than the CAP 2 given the fairly low first time pass rates of the CAP 2s compared to the masters. Theres a fair bit of work involved, but its nothing that you wouldnt be expecting from a masters course in general. I've actually really enjoyed my year though and if I can just get through these last few weeks of exams I'll be delighted I did it. Its far from the worst year of your life!

Best of luck whatever you decide to do anyway.
