I am in a job which i really don't like. It was great at first but after a few years its pretty much a dead end job. So i am chasing my dreams and i have applied to go back to college to something i have always wanted to do since i was a kid. In my late 20s and i think its the right time to go for it. There wasn't alot of options when i finished school so i ruled it out then and just got stuck in a rut. When i say options, there were so few colleges that had the course i wanted to do. There are few more colleges offering the course now and there is one which i am very very interested in.

That's all good, you say. But my real problem is i get so nervous going for something i always wanted. I went into my own driving test crying. If it wasnt for my driving instructor and his bottle of rescue remedy, i would have probably failed. When being so nervous, i also sometimes stutter. Coming up to such a situation, i often feel so confident and i believe in myself but then i would just start crying and/or stuttering. Sometimes even start shaking. Weird.

I can see myself doing the course but its the dreaded interview. I dont know when it is but its sometime in april. Loads of time to prepare. I can be prepared but its the nerves. I know people do get nervous but do they get it as bad as me? Crying? Shaking? Stuttering? Is it worth a trip to the doctor? Is there anything that can calm me down?

im a firm beliver of hypnosis but only the proper stuff, it helped me off the cigs and another person I know went to the same fella for the shakes and it cured him

your basically suffering a panic attack and nothing medical will stop it because its all in your head. its hard to say stuff like relax and breathe etc because you sound a little more beyond that amount of nerves.

    good luck

Hi. It's probably no harm going to a therapist and getting some advice. Dealing with stressful situations is a life skill after all. Just see it as preparation for an interview! If you stutter a speech therapist might be of use, and might be covered by your health insurer or even on a medical card.

The more interviews you go for the more natural they will be for you. You must be prepared for interviews - read a book on interview technique: the questions you can be expected to answer, the common pitfalls in interviews and most importantly know the role you are applying for inside-out.. the more confident you are going into the interview the more successful the outcome will likely to be.

    Hi Op!

I have a friend who`s like this she actually vomits she get so nervous so yes it does happen to other people. There must be some stressful situation where you don`t get this nervous eg exams or social gatherings? maybe try to relate the two things in your head and apply your destressers for that situation, since there your personal coping strategy. Hope that makes sense :)

Otherwise arrive in plenty of time and sit and just breath, talking to yourself and telling yourself it`ll be fine. Imagine the situation, walk through it in your head and stop every now and then to assess your anxiety level, maybe give it a number from one to ten, keep repeating till your anxiety subsides. When your called focus on remaining calm and breathing. Work on the day before and the day being as stress free as possible, everything gentle, imagine your floating nothing is going to bother you.
