out in crescent shopping centre today and i had my bluetooth on when i received a notification of a new message. thinking it was the shopping centre bluetooth system i accepted to receive the message.

it was a picture of a young child naked. i would ask anyone that this happened to that they immediately contact security staff as they are now aware of the issue and have involved the gardai.

i kept the bluetooth message in my inbox and handed my phone to the gardai. they will be able to extract the EXIF data from the picture and hopefully it will also contain the geo-tagging information (where the picture was taken). i also hope that having left the message in my inbox they will be able to get the IMEI number of the exact phone that sent the message and catch whoever did this.

suffice to say this person cant have been far away from me at the time (bluetooth range - 10metres) and apart from the obvious reason why i was upset at this is that i had my five year old son with me at the time.

i understand what you mean, the idea that it was some sick fcuk looking for a reaction and i would't have been a specific target per se, but just i wanted to make people aware of this in case they received the pic and deleted it in disgust and carried on about their business.
i would have done so too had i not known that this type of thing IS traceable and perhaps when the person IS caught that they might think twice. i mean, theres childish pranks and then theres just sick.

Firstly I admire your courage for going to the security staff and reporting the incident as many would have ignored and deleted it. I hope whoever was responsible is caught and the full effect of the law thrown his way.

Jesus that's a worrying and disturbing story, that is an image that no decent person should have to view especially someone with children. Bluetooth has to be short distance I know, but does someone have to have your number to send you a message/picture off it? If someone does send you a message off it does their number come up? Even if it was "some sick freaks kids" who sent that no person should have to view that filth and they should be found out and punished.

They do not need a number. They do a search for bluetooth devices and literally send the message. Your phone invariably will ask you for permission to accept and soon as you do you get whatever they send you.

Ya thanks man, I had a phone with it a few years ago but I had forgotten all about it. What kind of a fcuked up freak would send someone a message like that to anybody, in particular a mother/father of a young child, would I be right in saying it would be easy to track down the person who sent it?

yes, it would be easy for the garda tech to trace where this came from once they have my phone as all incoming connections are logged in onboard phone memory, and phones much like computers have what's called a "MAC address" or "unique identifier" that they use to communicate when sending info by wireless or bluetooth.

thats why as helpful as the garda was, it would have been no use for me to bluetooth the picture to his phone as he then would only have had the address from my phone and not the original sender. thats why i offered that he kept my phone.

You have heard of happy slapping? It is done to get a funny reaction. Same thing here I guess. They are trying to feed their ego's.

I didn't know this was possible but if I understand how it's done then it's frightening in that the sender has no idea who the receiver will be, it could be going to any age group.

I admire the op for doing what they did, hopefully the sender is caught and punished.

I'm just curious here, but a few people have commented that this would be somehow worse if received by someone who has children? Why so? Are those people of the opionion that if someone is childless they are somehow accepting of child pornography?

i put this in the limerick city forum because it happened in limerick city, even though i could just as easily have posted it in a lot of other more well read forums. it could just as easily have happened anywhere else in the country to anyONE else in the country, that wasnt my point.

parent or not, the idea of the post was to make PEOPLE aware, and my considered best course of action. it was never an emotional thing or i would have voiced my heart wrenching disgust and revulsion at the fact that here is this thing pushed in my face, and this could just as easily have been MY child.

OF COURSE IT ISNT saying that any individual would feel any less disgusted, my intention was to put the information out there for people to be wary of this kind of thing and what to do should it happen to them!

i hope that clears it up for you, and since its against the forum charter to personally attack another poster, i'll leave it at that and ask that a Mod close the thread.
