PC freezing on desktop

I'm stumped at the moment. My main PC freezes about a minute after booting to desktop (XP SP3) regardless of whether I start a program or not. No programs were install before it crashed and no new hardware has been installed. The HD is 3% fragged. This is what I've tried:

    - System restore to early January
    - Full virus scan (Avira found one malware file, quarantined, no viruses)
    - CCleaner scan, registry and cleanup
    - Disabling all startup items via MSConfig
    - Checked and reset all motherboard connections

Nothing has made any difference so far. Any ideas?

Try boot in safe mode(press F8 while booting), if it happens in Safe mode as well then it is likely a hardware problem.

In that case the next thing I would do is download and start running memtest against the RAM.

Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

I've encountered this on a few occasions.
chkdsk /f found and fixed the problems, but you will need a new HDD. Chances are it's about to crash. Back up your files asap.

Sorry should've mentioned that it works fine in safe mode.

Try Safe Mode with command prompt and run chkdsk /f (or is it /p in safe mode? I can never remember). It's one or the other. You won't break it by picking the wrong one anyway. It'll just tell you that it's not valid.

Thanks. Checkdisk ran fine with no errors but the PC is still freezing on the desktop. I'm beginning to suspect a hardware problem.

stick in your windows xp installation disc then click windows start button then click all programs then accessories and click on run. type this in

sfc /scannow there is a space after sfc try that. you could also have an incompatable program on your system causing it to not respond. have a look also in add/remove programs in control panel just to see if theres a dodgy program there. sfc /scannow is the system file checker to make sure all files are original. worth a shot though. also start the pc in safemode with networking and download and update this malwarebytes http://www.malwarebytes.org/ it's free and scan in safemode.

service pack 3 is a disaster as i have come accross many problems when people updated to sp3. also for elimination purposes you could remove the graphics driver and do a test on the pc to rule that out could be a bad graphics driver problem as well. elimination is the key.

Hi everyone, im not sure if im in the right forum but I have Packard Bell desktop computer only about a year and half old and it now seems to freeze completely after about 20 minutes and the only way to fix it is turn off the pc for a few minutes manually and then turn it back on a few minutes later. I tried a free registry cleaner that i downloaded online and it worked for about 4 days hassle free.
Any help would me greatly appreciated. Thanks
