basically i was sacked before xmas. i appealed the decision and it failed but they sent me notice of this by addressing the letter to, and this is just an example

    'Mr Bloggs'
    Street
    Town
    County

    instead of lets say

    'Mr Joe Bloggs'
    Street
    Town
    County

it went to my namesake address in same area and he had to deliver it to me - opened! This was an utterly humiliating experience and i rung the gombeen in HR and ate her out of it. Can i take legal action against the company?

The letter was addressed to you, it's not HR problem that you live in the same area as a namesake.. there is no way to prove it was done out of malice.

    I agree.

Also, I'm a little confused. Did HR have the correct address for you? Surely, even if you had a namesake in the same area it would not go to them unless they also had that person's address. If you gave them the right address how would it go to the wrong person?

Same thing happened to me years ago though not with a work related letter. It was for a hospital appointment. The letter that was sent out was just addressed to J Bloggs, Townland, Town, County. Problem was that a relative with the same address, surname as me and initial for the first name ended up getting it instead.

Damn our archaic address system here. I remember years ago having to write Joe Bloggs (Carpenter) on the envelope when I was sending mail to someone who lived in a rural area.

Hi all thanks for your replies

Well i was sacked for one mistake, granted her mistake may have been genuine but would she have been as careful to make such a mistake if it was a letter to a client that potentially could reach a competitor?
Its all confidentiality at the end of the day.

They addressed it to 'Mr' and then my surname instead of putting my first name in the address.
Surely people could address a letter more specifically, given that its of such a sensitive private nature. they have my full name and address on file with the last 3 years and two months i worked there and they certainly knew my first name in my reprimand and subsequent dismissal letter.

i may also add threat by namesake i meant that only surname matched not any of the first names. very sorry. i see how people may have been confused now

It's a postal problem. The company will send it to the address on file. Don't you have a house number or name?

I think more embarrassing is getting your neighbour's (who has the same name as me) final demand letter from Sky for the porn movies he ordered and never paid for :)
And then having to give it to his 60 year old mother to pass onto him!!

Surely you have a housename? Like Windrush, or St Marys or other county sounding names.

That way the envelope makes it way to your house, and not the other mans house who happens to have the same name.

and surely you provided your full address to your employer.

I liken this to someone who lives on Main Street and likes to receive their post as "John Smith, Main Street" instead of "John Smith, 33 Main Street" it seems to be an Irish thing to make yourself look famous by not needing a housename or number.

hi. i live in a rural area so there is no house names or numbers and my neighbour's first name is different to mine

Just get over it, to be honest. I can understand that you're feeling resentful but trying to take legal action against a company for this is petty and pointless.

I was let go from a HSE job as I made a complaint about my boss to the HR department, She had been telling me and other people that she was a white witch and she was putting spells on us ( we used to die laughing about this) but it got serious when my mother was killed in a car crash last year and she kept bringing me into the office saying the she was in contact with my dead mother and she in hell because of the way she died. Everytime I didn't finish my blood sweep on time on the ward I was brought In and told that my mother appeared to her telling her that she was discussed with me and hated me!! I ended up in counselling over it and medication!!!! My point is the HR department did nothing about it and when my contract was up it was not renewed. Hun there is no point complaining, what happened to you was disgraceful and shouldn't of happened but your complaint will just fall on deaf ears. Move on and find a job where people will treat you with the respect you deserve.

I’m only new to the work & jobs forum but already I’m finding lots to get my blood up. As a nation we have some of the strictness employment laws in Europe and yet people are still losing their jobs on the whim of someone else.

I hope both the OP and FiennesJ sued for unfair dismissal. Unfortunately the result of an action like this doesn’t hit the offender in the pocket, just the company.

This doesn't sound right. If you were not the only one subject to her delusions, you should have been able to get witnesses for an appeal.

Well to be fair i prob haven't grounds to contest the termination as i made a blooper and didn't own up and it contravenes their procedures. fair enough i made a mistake and the hr rep made another, they happen but i strongly maintain that employee confidentiality should be paramount especially with such a sensitive issue. i dont believe they would make such a mistake if one of their contracts with a client fell into the hands of a competitor. If the boot was on the other foot they would throw the book at an employee who made such an error.
To be honest i am going to move on to the next chapter of my life. The scumbags are not going to occupy any more of my headspace then they already have. Heres to the future :-)
