I emailed my local county council about this a while ago and this is the reply I got
If you intend leaving the course and starting a completely different one you will only recive 1/3 of your maintenance grant (if eligible) and no registration fee will be paid until you enter second year.

Edit: You may also be liable for tuition fees for the first year too. I think you've just missed the cut off point, so it would be tuition fees for the full year, if you're going back to first year anyway.

thanks for the quick reply :D
what do you mean by tuition fees? is that extra to registration fees?

Yup, you'd be repeating first year technically so the cost would be a couple of thousand euro.

Yeah it is, everyone here is entitled to their first undergraduate course under the free fees scheme, where the government pays your tuition fees. There's some more information on it here.
But basically, I think it's if you're repeating any stage of a course, you have to pay the extra fees, which vary between colleges and courses. I'd contact your college about it for more specific information.

Would that be the same with the V.E.C's? That youd get 1/3 of the grant?
