hi all, have a question about rent allowance, firstly can you claim rent allowance if the rent on the property goes above 650 pm

and will they allow a 3 person family to get rent allowance on a 4 bed house

case in point, 4 bed house, price is 750 pm, maybe dropping to 700, family is mother father baby

    thanks!

They will only allow you on a two bedroom. That is the allowance they will give you.Their excuse is you are "overaccomodated" They wioll not allow you to pay the excess either as they say you cannot manage on the residue. Sticky one

well I think its fair enough to ony allow a 2 bedroom. Rent allowance is to put a roof over your head not for you to live the life of luxury.

Logically rent on a 2 bed will be less than rent on a 4 bed. Why should our welfare system pay out more in rent allowance than is needed ? The country is hardly flush with cash to be doing this now is it.

OP sorry if that sounds harsh but Im not working my arse off and paying taxes to allow families with Rent allowance have 2 free guest rooms

D3PO, it would be useful if you had included something constructive in your post.

It depends on the county see the table here: http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/social-welfare/social-welfare-payments/supplementary-welfare-schemes/rent_supplement

You cannot exceed these limits without permission (unlikely to be given in normal circumstances). If you exceed the limit you get nothing. Also note that you have to make a contribution from your own income.

Couple with 1 child or one-parent family with 1 child:|

    Counties covered | Maximum rent
Dublin, Kildare and Wicklow | €930 per month (Dublin) €880 per month (Kildare and Wicklow)
Longford, Westmeath, Laois and Offaly | €131 per week
Clare, Limerick and Tipperary North | €140 per week
Cavan, Monaghan, Louth and Meath | €131 per week (Monaghan and Cavan) €163 per week (Meath) €149 per week (Louth)
Donegal, Leitrim and Sligo | €131 per week (Donegal and Leitrim) €140 per week (Sligo)
Carlow, Kilkenny, Waterford, Wexford and Tipperary South | €140 per week
Galway, Mayo and Roscommon | €163 per week
Cork and Kerry | €143 per week (Kerry) €163 per week (Cork)
