    Hi,

Getting the error "windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt.....you can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original CD-Rom. Select 'r' ...etc etc.

Problem is I don't have the original CD for this PC. Can I download it ? I see a lot of Boot CD when I google but not sure if they are the same thing ?

Can I use a CD from another PC ?

Not boot, the CD referred to is the installation CD with the XP operating system on. You can try asking your mates if any of them have an XP setup CD?
Probably not 100% kosher but as you just need to repair files, not copy an OS I don't think there's an issue.

Why ? Is the setup cd unique to each pc ? i.e. tied to a product ref numner ?

any chance I will lose the product ref or product code by using another CD ?

The copy of Windows you buy that's installed on the computer is bound to that computer, there should be a sticker somewhere on the PC with a licence key.
If you got a CD with, then the licence code could be on the CD. This is to prevent you buying one copy of Windows and installing it on more than one PC.

If you have Windows XP Home installed, then borrow a Win XP Home edition CD, if you have PRO installed, borrow a Win XP Pro CD.
As you're not installing Windows but merely repairing it there's no need to enter licence key again. Hope this helps.

OK - apparently my error (\windows.0\system32\config\system) refers to multiple installastion of the OS. Managed to get hold of a CD and selected the Repair options....it lists the installations and when I select c:\windows.0 I can get to the DOS or command prompt but not sure where to go from there ?

Try fixboot or fixmbr at the dos prompt.

I'm not sure how legal this is, but you could try isobuster.

Now the programme itself is legal, but I'm not sure if the following is. Just to be sure, I'm going to report this post to the mods.

When you have recovered all the files, you could then create a bootable iso and then burn to disc. You're basically backing up your own copy of XP to another disc.
