Transfering files from old broken laptop

A friend has had to buy a new laptop as his old one would not boot. The laptop would power on but it would not display anything on screen. As far as I know it's got an IDE 2.5" HDD. His new one has a SATA 2.5" HDD.

I have a IDE laptop, could I put his old hard drive into my laptop and transfer files over ethernet. Or would his old installation of XP have problems with the hardware of my laptop?

I know the obvious solution is to buy an external enclosure but I'm trying to avoid spending money.

    Thanks for your help.
