I am considering applying to this course on a part time/evening basis. I graduated from WIT with a National Certificate in Business Studies (i think this is now called a Higher Certificate) in 2001. I have worked in the Insurance Industry since graduating so I'm very hopeful I will be accepted. My long term goal is to get to a level where I could lecture in Business.

Would like to receive feedback from anyone who undertook this course on a part time basis. Any information on the course, work load, what follow on courses are available etc would be much appreciated.

Hey kev I didn’t actually do the night course myself but I know a few people who have done it. From what I can gather you would go straight into the 3rd year of the BBS(Bachelor of Business Studies Honours) course and given that you have been working in industry previously you would not be required to complete a semester of work experience.

As well as studying business you will be required to pick a stream i.e. area you would like to specialise in, do you know which stream you would like to choose? you have options of like Accounting, Human Resources, Management, Economics and Finance and Marketing, i know they offer a general stream for the full time students im not certain if this is the case for night time students. Just to let you know that in Human Resources, Management and Marketing you will be required to complete a thesis in that area people find them daunting but its can be advantageous to you if you go on to do a masters and are required to do another(bigger) one for that.

It is possible to do only some subjects if you so choose for example you might decide that instead of doing the regular 6 subjects you might do 3 this year and 3 next year, of course this way will take you longer but with less of a work load
Another option open to you is that you might opt to do Financial Services course which is a 2 years add on to your Higher Cert.

I given you a lot of waffle their kev but hopefully you can take something out of it given and ask me anything else you want to know about the course, if you let me know more about your choice of stream I might be able to give more info on it or put you in touch with someone who’s done it before.

Thanks jayboi for your detailed response. It was very helpful. That sounds great about going straight to 3rd year. I think I would opt for either the Managment or Ecomomics and Finance stream.

Thinking long term here but would you have any idea what the requirement is to lecture in Business. Would a masters be mandatory? Also would a particular stream give you a better chance of landing a lecturing role?

Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

id advise you to throw an email to the adult education department ace@wit.ie it cant hurt to ask a few questions your not committing to anything and your getting the official stance and procedure on your application and what it would involve, you could even try contacting the admissions office to inquire about an application admissions@wit.ie.
You generally need a 50% average to go from the Higher Cert to 3rd year BBS but given that you will be applying as a mature student im not sure how this would work or if even a requirement in your position.
At the moment to lecture in the WIT you need masters level qualification at university I think its PHD level, im not sure if you need to complete a H.Dip or not im sure some of the other people around here would know.

As for which is better in order to lecture in I wouldn’t be sure id imagine it would depend somewhat on what stream you pick i.e. to lecture in marketing it would obviously be an advantage to do the marketing stream etc
I think I might know a few people did the management course I’ll try and ask them when I see them.

Thanks for those e-mail addresses jayboi. I'll definately send off a mail. Looks like I have a bit of work to do before getting to lecturing level! :)
