Just to top off the ****tiest day ever, my macbook pretty much fecked up on me and I've no idea whats wrong with it. It's just showing a black screen when turned on and nothing else. The sleep light appears to be on constantly and the disk spins at startup but thats about the only sign of life I get from it. Any chance anyone can help with this?

Much appreciated, would be nice to get atleast something back working

    What Macbook is it?
Have you tried booting from the install disc?
    Install any RAM recently?
    NVIDIA graphics card?

One of the unibodies, MB 13.3/2.0/CTO

    purchased in may 2009

    Processor2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
Hard Drive 160GB Serial ATA @ 5400 rpm
    Optical DriveSD 8x (DVD+R DL/DVD+RW/CD-RW)

AFAIK, I didn't get an install disc with it, no new ram installed (haven't touched the hardware since purchase) and I don't think it's got a NVIDIA graphics card.

You must have gotten some sort of OS Disk. It's in the cardboard pouch that comes with every Macbook. Instructions etc..

Best thing to do is call Apple today and let them run through some diagnostics.

Still within warranty - ring Apple. Excellent customer care.

Cheers, seems like ringing apple is the best thing to do then.

Any advice as for how to get all the stuff off my hdd before sending it in?

Assuming you have a USB drive use Time Machine.

Oh, you have no monitor... if you have Firewire you can start up as a slave drive and copy stuff to another mac (at leased you used to be able to - haven't done it in ages)

It seems to be that just the screen or backlight (whichever) is gone, everything else is fine apparently, as it logged onto msn by itself when turned on and the only controls not working are the ones concerning the screen (f1/f2)

Could I just use the mini display port connection to connect to a monitor and use that? :)

That should work fine - as long as you have the Display port to VGA/DVI cable.

Definately use time machine - I sent a mini in for RAM upgrade and had to delete a load of work stuff for security reasons. Time Machine left it exactly as it was before sending it out.
