What is the story with the one gob****e that always pops up in a thread to say "oh its been done", "been here, done this- go find it" and so on. Of course questions and opinions will be discussed more than once, maybe because a new member thinks its a fresh question or just because you want to phrase it in your own way and couldn't be arsed to search for the last time it was discussed in 2006 or whatever!

What's the story with that one smart arse that tries to prove that they know absolutely EVERYTHING about AH???

(awaits said comment about current post)

Can be annoying alright. Normally just someone looking for a thanks and cant think of anything original to say.

I find it annoying if there is a thread on something that day and then somebody makes one pretty much exactly the same.
All they would have to do is scroll down the page, to see it...
But no, they create a new one instead.

Other than that, I have no real gripes regarding this.

Probably because it has already been done?

You use the word gobshite, referring to users who have noticed a previous related thread.

    Don't do that again!

    Never thought of that.

He called me a gob****e, I think I might be offended...

    No...wait...it was just gas.

The problem with the search function if a thread is older than a few days is that people seem to say "let the thread die" or "whats with digging up the old thread" so you're kinda in the same boat either way.

OP dont take it personally there are just people who have been on a forum a long time and they are fed up with the same topics again and again.

Although they could probably do with saying it in a nicer way or now here's a crazy idea just dont post at all if its something they've already discussed!

Some people will try to score points off you by making a comment that attempts to make you look silly but thats just schoolyard stuff so i wouldnt give it much notice.

In general people are nice here and give you good feedback,
is there someone in particular giving you a hard time???if so you could report them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,706 ✭✭✭fonecrusher1

I think the OP has a valid point.
There are some people on this forum that take pleasure in racing in to point out this fact, not with the intent of helping the OP but merely to relish the thanks from other similarly pedantic nerds members.
If the topic has been discussed months ago & has gone cold then what harm if a new member renews interest.

Sadly there is a percentage of members who see boards.ie as their only interaction with other human beings.

I haven't had this on my own posts, but it wrecks my head that every second post I go into has the exact same comment somewhere on the first page!

We all know where the search function is, but why bother bringing up a post thats a few months/years old and pages long already, when the information is now probably irrelevant. If that was the case, no-one would ever bother posting and the AH forum would just become a research archive with the odd new comment on each thread!!

And while Im on a moan, whats the story with the ndz and nz on words, goes to show the mentality behind the post!

Yeah i know what ya mean there is no point in dragging up a thread from yrs ago because as someone said there you'l get some people saying "whats the deal with the old thread" etc..

I guess its just like in life ya get people who are nice ya get people who are assholes. Some of the stupid posts you see could be trolls looking for attention others are just stupid, ignorant or pathethic people.

when i see a comment that i know is purposely trying to belittle another member i stop reading it and completely disregard it, move onto the next post. I dont think it annoys me as much as it annoys you!

As for the random "z" on the end i have no idea!!:D

While certain facts might be old indeed, the stated facts could still stand - as well as various points made within the older threads.
Some of us then find it absolutely tiring to have to regurgitate from the start the same said points for those that can't be bothered their arse to just use the search function, see if such a topic exists already, read and come back with a better informed basis for their own opinions.

As pointed out, its up to an individual poster to use the "report" function if they feel they are being victimised, etc.

    +1.

What's most annoying about it is, is that it's nearly always the same people saying 'done to death' etc and then when you dig up a thread instead of starting a new one they're in with 'why did you bother digging this up? it's from loike 2007, gawd'.

If indeed an old thread is dug up, and a person is unable to show just cause and relevance to the present day, some genuine good posters might wonder why within reason, such a thread is being dug up.

I absolutely accept that there might be a small few that knock people for digging up old threads - if only for the sake of being a possible plonker - but if a person can show relevance and connection from the old thread to the present day, most here will see the "knocking" plonker for what they are.
...and you can bet the mods will soon be having a quiet word with them too if their possible "trolling" or bad behaviour is reported.

I wish the mods would merge threads more often but they probably have enough on their plate
    months ago
Years ago = fair enough start a new thread
    Months ago = maybe
Weeks ago = No (especially if its a constantly recurring topic where the same points, arguments, evasiveness, missing the point, generalising, trolling, ignorance and stupidity get recycled over and over again)
Days or even hours ago = You cant be serious
    .
Sadly there is a percentage of members who see boards.ie as their only interaction with other human beings.
In some cases that if true would actually be a good thing (for the sake of other human beings)

In fairness thread titles tend to be so far removed from their contents on AH that in most cases you couldn't reasonably expect someone to hit on them with a search. On the other hand, there's nothing to stop posters who are aware of the other thread providing a link to same in their friendly, helpful replies to the OP.

I've haven't noticed anyone referencing a thread from 2006, it's usually a day or two old and reason people point it out is to cut out what is essentially 'forum spam'. Anyway, I think this is where you're looking for....

Seriously. Search function. find it.. believe in it.. feel it!

We might has love forr you denz.

The thing is that bar current events pretty much everything has been disucussed here before.
Worst housemate, Best practical joke, Most embarrassing moment, etc, etc.

Old topics get brought up all the time as if they're being discussed for the first time.
The people in the thread are obviously enjoying the discussion so leave them to it I say.
I don't know why old hands can't ignore these threads, rather than killing them by jumping in and pointing out to the 'n00bs',
how it's all been done before.

But yes, if the topic was already discussed last week then the repeated thread should be killed.

I think this forum would benefit greatly from disabling the 'thanks' button.
Its only turning it into a popularity contest.

Whats wrong with expressing your thanks to another member via a PM?

.....i can imagine all the 'thanks' addicts...noooooooo!!!!..its the reason i live!!!

The "thanks" button for me is a quick way of saying "I agree with something", "like something" or simply "thanks".
I'd hate to see it's demise.

I've never seen it been used as a popularity contest - it indeed might have been but this blind bat (me - just to be clear) hasn't seen it yet.

There's nothing wrong with saying "thanks" by pm.
The admin of the forum has gone to the bother of giving us a very useful choice though of saying just that - and I'm happy with it.

If some thinks they have a reason to live just because they got a "thanks" - they seriously need to get out more! :D

    Au contrare

I reckon we should have a "thanks" "double thanks" and "Go and f*** yourself" (or words to that effect) button

How about a "FFS go outdoors, have a person to person chat with someone you lonely pedant instead of hawking around this forum trying to get thanks from other users" button? Bit too long?
