washed the car today for the first time since christmas. i nearly got a stroke when i saw the amount of tar in the sides down low and all around the back. i knew there was something funny when i was washing it with the old tea towel as i could feel bumps but didnt take notice until it dried

Bit of petrol on a rag takes it off with ease!

    Or Tar Remover.

AKA Turtle Wax Bug & Tar Remover making sure you use a proper tar removing sponge so you do not damage your paintwork.

It can be a tiresome job removing car but remember you can always bring it to a valeter who will normally charge €40 for wash, wax, bug & tar removal.

Its nuts, the amount of people who give out about the amount of tar on their cars and I never get any. Even people who live a few miles away from me get covered in tar and I never get a single blob of it. It must be the roads I use.

Strange for the time of the year, I regularly get it on the car in the summer.

There was a thread on here a week or two ago about removing tar. I think WD40 is quite good as someone pointed out. I used a clay bar before

Ive used WD40 before, still needs some good auld elbow grease with it though. If takes the wax of the car too, if you wax your car that is.

Its teedious work, but if its bad enough youll do it

Could be something to do with the roads being wrecked by all the salt on them.

Which also as a nice side effect means our cars will be prone to the same rust problems traditionally warned about when looking at UK imports :(

I had my car valeted a couple of years or so back, I remember they were going crazy - told me they'd taken about 100g of tar off it!

Is there anything you can put on you car to protect the paintwork, what about one of the plastic film products, would it be easier to remove the tar if it wasnt on the paintwork.

I've seen those being applied on TV, they look good. Much better the the bra's you see on some cars in the US.

Would regular waxing not do the same job? As it's applying a protective layer over your paint.
