Ok people....this might be a stupid question but im just trying to get my head around it .

OK, anytime i hav a migrane i always fill the bathroom sink up of cold water, i stick my head in to cool down ( usually relieves the pain for a bit) . But when i do this i always seem to need to back out and take a breath .
Why does this not happen when in a swimming pool ( where i could stay under water for nearly a minute) ?

Is it due to different the cold water in the sink or more pressure in the smaller area or anything?

    Open to any replys....

Hope its not TOO stupid of a question,

    thanks for replies in advanced.

You should have a read of the mammalian reflex page on Wikipedia. It only occurs for water somewhat colder than 21 degrees Celsius, so if these are heated swimming pools it might explain it, even non-heated pools will probably heat up a good bit with people using them, and it may be enough to prevent the reflex from occuring.
