To Drill or not to Drill, that is the question - water off the mains or from a well

    [FONT=Calibri, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial]HI guys.
    Quick question here. Just looking for some second opinions really.
    We are currently in the process of a build and had intended to get our water supply from the mains.
    We had thought for a while about drilling a well and getting our own water supply but for various reasons did not go down that route.

    With the impending water charges likely to be coming into place in the near future, if you were in my position would you drill a well as opposed to take water off the mains.

    Please also bear in mind that a % of my council levy (around €5000-€6000) is due for the fact that we said we would take our supply from the mains. If we decide to go down the road of a well, this money should hopefully cover is for the whole process.

    Anyone got any opinions on this?

    In my mind, use the mains. You're still going to have to power the pump if you go off a well. Plus, mains water has been tested and purified to a level you are probably unable to do on your own.

    The water levy is very little money, a few quid a month. If you've already paid for the connection, you may as well use it.

    I have not paid the full levy yet and if I was to go down the well route I would not be liable for the 5-6K.

    A quote from a drilling company may make the decision for you, also consider the running costs of your own water treatment system. What's the groundwater like where you are?

    You may even meed permission to drill for water as the planning application would have been submitted stating that the water was to be "mains" not a well. Check you don't accidently breach the planning.

    Quack, you sure your levy includes water connection? On mine, in Galway, its stated, this is the levy, this does not imply you get water, this is to pay for the facilties of water/footpaths etc in the area. its a seperate fee again for water to our house..

    Don't be so sure about not paying water charges for water from your own well, the greens consider water from any sourse as being everybodys water.
