Just to be pedantic, I'd have said that the return was a 1K before transaction costs or 100% return

"In finance, rate of return (ROR), also known as return on investment (ROI), rate of profit or sometimes just return, is the ratio of money gained or lost (whether realized or unrealized) on an investment relative to the amount of money invested. The amount of money gained or lost may be referred to as interest, profit/loss, gain/loss, or net income/loss. The money invested may be referred to as the asset, capital, principal, or the cost basis of the investment. "

In this example your profit of 1000 would be exempt from tax because it would be under the capital gains allowance of 1270, however for gains over that amount you pay 25% in tax.

    One more question

When i see the price of a share rise to a high price and i want to sell my shares and i ring my broker(sharewatch) and say i want to sell, is that it do i get them at that price, or do they have to find someone to buy mine ... Basically how does that side of things work ?

normally trading can be done online depending on your broker, you normally have 2 options, sell at the market price (best price) , probably a bit risky if its a smaller company. or else you put in the price you want to sell at. You will then be asked how long you want to leave it on for, end of day or some date you want. The order will just sit there until its filled or you change your mind. Once its executed, you should normally get your money after 3 days

    At a guess:

Execution only means you tell the broker what to do and (s)he does that exactly.
Advisory means he advises you what to do and you make a decision then, and he goes with your decision.
Discretionary I'm assuming means you give him bag loads of money and he trades it as he sees fit...
