For a person with no mechanical skills whatsoever, I took the unusual decision to buy and restore an old bike just for knocking about on.

Anyway, toyed with the idea of finding and old Raleigh Scorpio (my first decent bike)........and I'm now the proud owner of this:-

The best bit is, it's mint so it doesn't need any serious work!:)

(the stuff on the handlebars is the original plastic that covered the bar tape!)

Ah, the type of ten speed racer I used to dream of...

By the time I actually got my first racer (definitely racer, not road bike), it had twelve speeds.

Anyone else think that saddle looks far too padded and comfortable?

It's nose seems to be a bit skyward!!

Also, one of the great things about bikes of that era is the meandering brake cables!!

They're not just of that era. There's a very obvious CTW-bought Trek Madone in my office car park with ludicrous amounts of cable poking out the front.

That's a great find - in any condition never mind mint ! well done.

    My racers of the eighties:

Not them either. Sadly sold for drink, fags and whores.

Loved my Raleigh Flyer, beautiful paint job. It was stolen and followed up by a Raleigh Criterium.

American site dedicated to preserving old 10 speeds.

    http://oldtenspeedgallery.com/about-otsg/

I have an American Fuji Espree twelve speed(Made by Subaru in Japan) with Fujis own butted tubing-I love it.

    Its like this one.

They need to be preserved from fixie mania.

You've inspired me Jawgap. I haven't a clue mechanically either but have just spoken to the ma and have arranged to take possession of both mine and my younger brother's (he's 41 now:)) bike from the roof of their garage and restore one bike between them.

Missus' job went t*ts up today so a free project is just what I need. Other boardsies prepare to be relentlessly bombarded with techie questions:)

    Cheers OP

My first ten speed was a Raleigh team cadet 10. Went touring on that bike with the CTC and then got into racing. Badly needed an upgrade and happened upon a Raleigh road ace 12 in a bike shop in Phibsborough. God the Shimano 600ax groupset on it was beautiful for it's time. Wish I'd never parted with it.

    Pristine example on eBay.

Ah, I remember the Dublin CTC. Went riding with them for a spell. My first road bike I built myself on a McClean frame donated by Con Collins (of CTC). I spent £64 in the Rutland Cycle shop on Nth Fredrick St and ended up with a 5-sp Suntour 14-34 block and matching derailleur and a brand new Brooks saddle. I broke that in on a 3-day tour of the Connemara Mountains one Easter in 1978 or so...

I got it in 1986 and it was second hand (from little sport in Fairview!)

    Thanks.

De brudder was around at the weekend and he reminded me what happened to the original.

I had outgrown it and he started using it. Of course as he was a younger brother I told him not to for no real rational reason except for the fact that he was a pest!!

Anyway, one day I'm walking home from school and just as I turn the corner into our street who do I see cycling towards me on my bike? Himself.

So, I had the hurley with me coming from after school training and as he came towards me I shouted at him to get off - he tried to accelerate away whereupon I stuck the hurley in the front wheel of the bike - wrecked the wheel, the hurley and his two front teeth!!!

The outcome was the bike was scrapped and he hasn't got on any bike of mine for a while!
