Getting a reg number without a tax book

Hi all, another slightly off the wall query. The classic in question is an old tractor from the 50's/60's belonging to a colleague of mine. This was recently pulled from a ditch, having laid idle for a few years and started and is now in reasonable mechanical shape. The owner wants to tax and insure it, but hasn't got a tax book and is unsure about the year of manufacture. Is it possible to register this on ZV's with such sketchy information? Any help is much appreciated.

Is it irish or is it a UK tractor?

Irish, but the owner has no documentation, no reg plates on it and cannot trace either.

    What make is it?

Don't see a problem re-registering it if the original details cannot be sourced.

As long as you can put a date on the thing in some formal way.

A Nuffield 4/60, which I have just discovered would make it 1961 to 1964

You should locate the chassis and engine number on the tractor, and if possible any other relevant details, e.g. name and address of last owner(s). Then write to your local tax office with all the info (and i'd even include a photo of the tractor, and a copy of your driving licence...to prove your bonafides..plus offer to call in to the office if required).
They MAY be able to trace the registration number for you.

However, if it hasnt been taxed for years the details wont be on their computer. Therefore it would mean somebody there would have to sit down and go through old ledger books (you could offer to come in and do this, if they would allow it;)

Basically write a really nice letter to them with all the info, etc and see what happens.
Personally I would try this first as I would much prefer to get it's original reg if at all possible.

If all else fails you could contact the Nuffield club in the UK and they may be able to narrow down the year (and month!) of manufacture of the tractor via the chassis number. You could then apply for a ZV plate.

They will probably push for a ZV as its less hassle for them, but do all you can to get the original.:)

She's not mine and the guy in question has no interest in the original reg (if it ever had one), so he'll take the route of least resistance to get a ZV. I on the other hand also have a 4/60 and would deeply love to get its original number back on it, so I'll see what happens there too.

what i had to do was go the county archives office armed with chassis number make & model of vehicle & trawl through books for hours until i found the matching page & then off to the tax office fill in a form that the gardai have to stamp & then i was issued with new documents, thats the only way it can be done, the tax office wont have any records of your tractor you will have to go to the archives office in your county.
