Old one gave up and need a replacement quickly.

I want a family hatchback with a biggish boot and max 80,000 miles that performs well on rough roads and isn't too slow. Oldest I would consider is 2004 but budget is only e7000.

Any suggestions would be very welcome.:)

My friend, the price quoted is the list price,as the previous post stated, cash is king,it's a buyers market. If you want to pay over the odds for a POS car in Ireland that has rarely been serviced or looked after,by all means do so.I'm not going to say you are wrong,I just dont agree with you.Does that make me wrong? It probably does in your eyes.
But for all intents and purpose's,the list price of that car is not what you pay for it.If you go in and pay the list price for something, thats up to you.Who am I to argue with you.
    Thank you though.

In the UK discounts are nowhere near what you can get here

I beg to differ. You can get feck all off anything here, you'll have a big thick salesman telling you he is on his knees selling you something at such and such a price and it's the best he can do.
This is a bit off topic but it's my experience.Since november I've been looking around for a vehicle, went into a few places here and stopped off in germany, wales and england (continental truck driver) and visited a few.In Ireland was the worst place to get a bargain (or value for money) whichever way you look at it.The other places were able to shift quite a bit on their quoted prices with added extras.I eventually settled to buy it in wales and did so saving myself over 2k for similar stuff here.
I would rather piss my hard earned money up against the wall than give it to some Irish business that pleads poverty after them having it so good for so long.
But again thats only me,an old thick mayo man.:)

I've bought maybe ten cars in the UK over the years, and it's always been my experience that prices are far more negotiable here. It does of course depend on how keenly the car is priced in the first place, though.

You must go in across the sales desk to them or have the magic touch or smile or something.

Anyways,Ootbitb, have fun in your quest for a car.Sometimes I understand women when they go out on a spending spee,it feels good coming back with something to show for it:).

How many cars have you bought in the UK over the years? Do you think that your Mayo charm is melting british hearts or something? Anyone who regularly buys in the UK knows that you're less likely to get much money off the asking price over there.
You're also assuming that every single car over in the UK is serviced meticulously and every single car over here is abused and neglected. All this tripe is unhelpful to the OP in any case.
OP, there's a few to choose from - cars like the Mondeo , Mazda 6, Avensis all came in hatchbacks in that class and the class below would include Mazda 3, Octavia, Civic to name a few. Petrol or diesel? Often there are better deals to be found in petrols, better buy if you're not doing high mileage.

UK discounts don't tend to be as big as here, a lot of the time here they build in big margins to allow for the fact that Irish people judge how much of a bargain they're getting by how much discount they get as opposed to what they pay.

I know someone who bought a mint 07 old shape Mondeo LX TDCi (115bhp) with 80k on the clock for around GB£4,500 recently.

4 cars and 3 motorbikes to answer you polite question. And as for your second,I wont even bother:rolleyes:.When you go to look at anything you have to know what you are looking at and looking out for, didnt think I needed to spell that out now come on.And yes I agree with you on something, this is entirely unhelpful to Ootbitb:).
    All the best Tea 1000.

Octavia has a big boot, and it's a nice car to drive.

If you want something quick, I have a 2004 Mondeo TDCi (Salon, but a big boot) with 77K miles that I'm thinking of selling (had to upgrade to an MPV - 4 kids). It would be well with in your budget. PM me if you might be interested. We won't bore everyone else with the details.

You might get a mazda 6 for that price too, they're not too bad at all either.

I would look no further than a Honda Accord 02 or 03.

Looking at autotrader online you see hundreds to choose from but put in your filters and precious few remain.

Checked out a few Octavia diesels but the miles are big so looked at petrol models and all I can find here are 1.4 engines. This car looks underpowered with such a small engine don't you think.

Got desperate yesterday and phoned a guy in Antrim about a 1.8 Primera. He assured me it was worth the 200 mile round trip as there wasn't a mark on the car and it was completely original and a good price. I arrive two hours later to find a resprayed heap with dinges , bits added, cobwebs in the rear and no, and I mean no, oil in the engine. He apologised for not having oil on the premises. Like I was going on a test run in that.

I'd go for an Audi A4-A6 maybe and avant model if you want an estate

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Audi/A4/AVANT/201003196600510/advert?channel=CARS

It's slightly older then what you're looking for but it's the milage that counts - lots of comfort and toys in them + all the space in the world and a bit more prestiege then an octavia which as cars go it's pretty grey both inside and out.
