    It's nothing new.
I'll be doing something similar with our album lauch...lots of different sales "packages" that offer more than just a download or physical copy.
It's the NIN/Josh Freese model, it just hasn't really been done a lot over this side of the pond.

    Indeed -

It was the negative reactions from some people that I thought was of interest.

Ah, you always have people who have this weird line in their head which makes you a sell out if you cross. I never really understand that...it's a business at the end of the day. As soon as you start selling something it's not solely about the creation of the art. You might create the art for very different reasons than making money, you do it because you love it and have to do it. That doesn't mean you shouldn't try to make a living from the results...

I agree - it's not only the bands that need to adapt to the New Order.
If an artist such as the Duke needs to scrimp to pay the rent it doesn't augur well for the future - especially if his pro-activity is seen as a negative by a lot of people.

Think its time to rethink the music biz

its not driven by record sales now, its driven by TV appearances either terrestial or satellite..

here is the problem, to succeed you must be able to perform live and gain a fanbase. and yet there is no huge live circuit, why cos the punters dont go to gigs for unknowns anymore -they too busy watching TV

so the cycle of cowell/record company built puppets cant be broken.

    change will have to come
maybe a decent chart show that has a dedicated new act theme, or some form of big star and slotsfor new performers arrangement

or Tv shows with an independant hosts who chooses acts on merit rather than having paid to appear

suppose what Im saying there is a lot of placement going on...

    am I rambling......or ranting

    .

i think the idea of subscription based web gigs is something that really should be looked at.

This is the reality for bands nowadays - sad but true.
Yes, Mr. Duke writes really well. Sounds to me like he has his head screwed on. The naysayers always have the loudest voices. I think he'll do well with this business model, after all, he has a quality product. Paul, are you saying the pledge idea is "sad"?

No - it's the reaction to it I find sad ..... and I guess it's unfortunate that he has to put so much effort into making a few bob, effort that I'd prefer to see put into music.

I think he has talent and individuality.

Well I don't think there are any artists at his level these days who are oblivious to their business affairs. He seems to have a good team, it was his manager who put it together, Duke has executive control, he's in a good position really. Mozart, Berlioz and Liszt had to manage themselves! :)

There's nothing wrong with the idea. Probably a good idea for some bands. This Special chap, however, is really appalling. He's James Blunt with eyeliner and dreads. Terrible music. He seems to have a bit of a fan base alright, but this is the case for many tacky, awful acts.
