Getting Rode NT1 mic and M-Audio Pre Amp to work together?

I got my microphone in the mail yesterday and I can't get it to work. It's a Rode NT1 condenser. When I plug it into my M-Audio Pre USB I'm getting nothing. It's like it's not powered on. The phantom power light is on, but still nothing. The old Shure C606 works fine, but I think the dynamic mics don't need phantom power? Any ideas?

Manual says I need P48 volts or P24 volts phantom power. Can't seem to find any details about how much phantom power the preamp has. Maybe the limitation is my laptop? It's a massive Dell XPS gaming one I got a few years ago so i'd say the powersupply is pretty hefty.

Hehe.. you have me there Niall.

Am.. the 3 pronged one that somebody gave me for the Shure. Are they called an XLR cable?

That's XLR both ends ? Niall's plan is the obvious next step.

XLR cable one end, normal (large) audio jack on the other end.

I'll try it on another computer tonight, don't know anybody else with an interface. I'll see can I find someone has one I suppose.

Try it with an XLR to XLR lead. I seriously doubt the lead your using is capable of supplying phantom power.

    Ah -

needs to be XLR to XLR for phantom.

Please go down to your local Garda Station where they will give you Westlife's Greatest Hits to listen to incessantly as punishment for such a schoolboy error. :(

We all have different areas of expertise Paul. It's not like I'm pretending to know anything about this stuff.

Westlife's Greatest Hits would be torture. I've got all the original albums and I'd miss the lesser known ballads and immaculate track sequencing.

    Thanks for that Fitz.

Shapey - it's one of the 'regulars' we get here !
I bet it says so in the manual too ;)

While the audio only need 2 (Jack)cables to work, for phantom to work you need 3 (XLR). Your dynamic mic will work but your condenser won't be receiving power.

I know. I feel your pain lads. I used work in tech support.

Everybody knows real men never read the manual or stop their car to ask for directions.
