Keeping with who's the best metal singer, who do you guys think is the best metal drummer.

For me it has to Mario Duplantier from Gojira, pure power. Was stood beside the tent at Graspop last year queing to meet Duff Mc Kagan & Gojira were playing at the same time, the sound of the drums coming from there was unreal!!!

A special mention must go to Vinnie Paul too

I can't really just name one drummer, but my personal favourites would be:

    Hellhammer - Mayhem/Arcturus/Winds
    Trym - Emperor
    Horgh - Immortal/Hypocrisy
Nick Barker - Formally of both Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir
Tjodalv - Formally of Dimmu Borgir now with Susperia
    Armaggedda - Immortal/I

    Tomas Haake - Meshuggah
    Danny Carey - Tool
    Mike Portnoy - Dream Theater
    Sean Reinheart - Cynic
Blake Richardson - Between The Buried and Me
Gene Hoglan - Strapping Young Lad, Death

Flo Mournier's pretty awesome too. I'm not a big fan of the usual ones, Joey Jordinson, Chris Adler, Lars Ulrich, and most classic rock drummers.

    Iggor Cavalera - Sepultura
Nick Menza - Orphaned To Hatred
    Shawn Drover - Megadeth
Gene Hoglan - Dark Angel/Strapping Young Lad/Fear Factory

Drummers I love include many who may not be technically as gifted as others, but bring a certain... Je ne c'est quoi... to their music. Others are brilliantly gifted and are in the upper echelons.

    -Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden)
    -Scott Travis (Racer X/Judas Priest)
    -Scott Rockenfield (Queensryche)
    -Tommy Aldridge (Thin Lizzy/Whitesnake/Ozzy)
    -Tommy Lee (Motley Crue)
    -Alex Van Halen (Van Halen)
-Cozy Powell (who didn't he play with......)
    -Nick Menza (Megadeth)
    -Herman Rarebell (Scorpions)
and probably loads more but these are off top of head...

Neil Peart is my favourite drummer, but isn't metal I suppose

I do love Thomas Stauch, formerly of Blind Guardian

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

I would also say Neil Peart but Rush isn't metal. So I guess I'd have to go for Martin Lopez from his time in Opeth. Every song the lad recorded was incredible.

He just brought that little bit different and special to the table. I miss him.:(

For rock Ian Paice (Purple) and Mike Terrana (Rage, Masterplan, Axel Rudi Pell etc.) for metal.

I saw an MTV Interview once with Ulrich in which he confessed to be the worlds worst drummer, I think I can find it actually....

at some point he talks about the fact that when starting to play drums he took no formal lessons and was just too eager to go out, play, and be in a band....although in fairness if it was rockstar or tennis player, I know what I'd do

Here's another interview in which he has a go at Newstead about something and then goes on to talk about how he's a little sceptical of his fans opinions when they hide behind smokescreens

Thomas Hakke, Mike Portnoy or Danny Carey without a doubt.

Although my favourite drummers are Gavin Harrison and Neil Peart.

    Trym Torson (Emperor, Zyklon)
    Horgh (Immortal, Hypocrisy)

    Portnoy, Benante, or Lombardo.

I'm kind of surprised that Brann Dailor hasn't been mentioned yet. I really like his style and the way he can get so much from only a six piece kit.

Dave Lombardo, Nick Barker, Frost, Gene Hoglan, Richard Christy, Pete Sandoval. they are all class.

Dave Lombardo is my favourite followed by barker.

    Neil Peart is unreal too.

Nicko McBrain has a really good style and rhythm. Joey Jordison is pretty good too :D

    Lombardo,
    Peart,
    Dailor,
    Bonzo,
Paul Bostaph is very good considering he had to fill Lombardo's shoes.
    Portnoy

I gotta say Phil Rudd is underrated, he's not flashy and rarely plays anything more complicated than a fill but man, he is just so solid and steady, none of the other AC/DC drummers (Chris Slade, Simon Wright) though good drummers, "felt" right.
I cant really explain it but Rudd just totally gels with the band he's in.
