What about looking here first of all? Prices for the 3 series have come down a lot recently so that surely has forced down the used ones by now. The A4 has also come down in price but I would still go for the BMW. I would look at the high spec Insignias, Mondeos and Superbs before buying either, neither really is worth the extra and the ones that match the Mondeo,Superb etc on price are poverty spec paddy spec ones with a low power engine while the non premiums can be had with everything, have loads more space and a good and powerful engine too.

OTOH the 320d is so close pricewise to the 520d(a 520d M Sport is only €3,000 dearer new than a 320d M Sport) I'm beginning to wonder why anyone would buy the 3 series in the first place.

Very true. You can get a 09 520D M Sport with low mls on the road including VRT for about 33-35,000 euros. Only about a grand or 2 more than 320D M Sport.
To answer your original question, depends if you want a better looking worse handling Audi or worse looking better handling BMW??

The A4 looks the biz, whereas the 320d linked already looks tired.

OP, I entered both into Carzone for the age and mileage then you expect to sell and there is very little difference between the two (http://www.carzone.ie/search/results?searchsource=finder&nParam=4294911128%2B4294911133%2B200290%2B200300%2B102554%2B102456&channel=CARS&cacheBuster=1264709947031774#nParam=4294911128%2B4294911133%2B200290%2B200300%2B102554%2B102456%2B200590%2B200253%2B33%2B41%2B200400%2B200439&sortby=Make|0&channel=CARS&currency=EUROS&searchResultsView=THUMBNAIL&maxrows=30).

That said I could not locate an A4 170bhp. Given it is a very rare model in Ireland and has good options, I would guess it will probably be worth slightly more.

Now which one is better to own is another argument;)

The Beemer ther would be best for resale but to maximise resale potential I'd be going for a Touring or Coupe rather than the saloon

I'd tend to disagree and say the Audi would have better resale in a few years, as you say then it would be current model vs last gen model, even though i cant see there being much in it to be honest

Estates carry a significant premium second hand in the UK, whereas over here, they can be harder to shift than saloons at times.
