It's not the first time someone has escaped from that prison.

I actually know someone who was let out of the prison unsupervised to attend a funeral in Dublin.

Sounds like you have some cool friends there...

5 prison guards with them I see, sure that means nothing really because they'd probably take strike action if they had to actually run after anyone.

They'll be begging to be incarcerated again in a matter of days.

if they were only brought to view the remains (it doesn't say anything about the removal) then how the hell did they get away from 5 prison officers?
is there any reason as to why the two haven't been named??

The 5 prison guards were met with 20 armed travellers at the funeral who demanded their release. The prison guards, unarmed, let them go for fear of their life.

    should've called the Guards

I'd say they did call the guards. Unfortunately the guards don't have micro second response times.

Open prison in Roscommon...what a great idea...who would want to escape?

Why didnt George W just move the prisoners from guantanamo bay to an open prison in Roscommon?

The US/World media would presume the prisoners were being treated fairly because its an open prison but in truth the prisoners rather face the water boarding than escape for a few hours and have a few down in the local.

Castlerea is actually a closed prison.
They were attending the funeral home to view the remains of their brother who died in Loughan House Open Prison over the weekend.
They were named yesterday in the papers as Patrick and John McDonagh - don't know why they're not named today in either the papers or on RTEs' website.
The reports yesterday also said that there were up to 60 travellers involved in the incident and one of the Officers received a neck injury.
Generally speaking ( but not always) , Officers usually volounteer for these escorts. All this means is that there'll be nobody brought out again for a long while. Why risk your health and your job and then be subject of an inquiry/investigation?
At least when they're caught - and they will be - hopefully they'll be charged and get extra time on their sentences. (Offences committed in custody carry consecutive sentences)

It's closed but it's minimum security.

I don't get it, we've been told constantly that prisons in Ireland are utter luxury. Plasma Tvs, Playstations, 3 square meals a day. I mean, who'd want to escape that?

That's like going on an all expenses paid holiday in an exclusive resort then running away from it to go and sleep in a dingy hostel where all they have is an old C64 and a black & white portable.

    These guys must be crazy.....

lol... Like 99% of 'escapees' in this country, they'll be picked up somewhere close to Mammys house. Guaranteed.

I don't know if the brother has been buried yet, but their own pig-headedness means that they miss the funeral.

I find it unusual that they fled during a funeral, given that the travelling community is so unique and ceremonious when it comes to burying their dead.

Surely this is the height of disrespect to the dead.... And they're extremely superstitious

good point, travellers usually burn the caravan in which the deceased lived. which is why a lot of them that own houses still sleep in caravans parked at the house.
but since the brother died in prison, will they have to burn that one down?!!:pac:

All them years of prank ringing 090 numbers and asking the local women to "Free the Roscommon Two" have finally paid off! :pac:

Any chance of locking up all 60 of the other k-words?
A total of 122 prisoners escaped or absconded from open prisons or while on accompanied outings with prison officers in 2008, according to the Prison Service's annual report for 2008.
Some 92 of those who absconded were back in custody by the end of the year.
30 gone per year - one every twelve days - yet these open prisons and outings still operate???
