No Power from front crawl kick

    Hi,

    I've been getting back to swimming while training for a triathlon. I've noticed some problems with my front crawl. I think my upperbody technique seems to be okay but I have some lessons coming up that will make sure that its okay.

    However I noticed that I have no power coming from my flutter and can't seem to get any at all. I know that there would be very little power anyway but I should be able to propel myself slowly through the water with just the kick shouldn't I?

    I was hoping that this might be a common problem and someone could tell me how to do this properly?

    Getting a good frontcrawl kick is a very tough thing to do and requires a lot of work. It's also a tough thing to diagnose from a teaching perspective. As long as your legs aren't hindering you body position, anything else is a bonus.

    Having said that, there are a few points I can give. Try and make sure your kick is not just coming from below the knees. Make sure to kick from slightly higher up and use your ankles a lot in the flick at the end of the kick. This should improve your feel and power in the water.

    For working on this, I'd start with larger strong, deep kicks and once you have the technique, increase the speed. You will have to reduce the depth to speed up but try and hold as much power as possible. Speed and endurance is the key in improving your kick. The majority of people when kicking with a board are either kicking so slowly, they never overcome the initial resistance to gain momentum at any real speed, or tire very easily.

    Be prepared for a bit of work but this should help in the longer distances.
