I remember the launch of this last year, and saw a billboard for it recently. The website (dublinsport.ie) takes me to the following page:

    http://www.dublincity.ie/RecreationandCulture/SportsFacilities/Pages/DublinSportie.aspx

whereby all that seems to have been done is that they've designed a nice logo. There's a photo of a cyclist on the billboard, so I had been hoping that they might have organised some cycling events.

It would be great to see a cyclosportive being organised starting and finishing in the city, or a pro criterium in the city, similar to the Kelloggs races in the '80's.

We can nominate our Ambassodor of Sport. Sounds to me like a job for Lumen:)

Some general info on the scheme here.
The European Capitals of Sport Association, with its comprehensive under-standing of sports, is in keeping with the Olympic tradition. ACES wants to promote the universal Olympic values on a municipal level. Just as the Olym-pic rings are linked with one another, so too are the five objectives of the member cities of ACES:

    ➀ Enjoyment in exercise *
    ➁ Willingness to achieve
    ➂ Sense of community
    ➃ Learning fair play
    ➄ Improvement of health

These five objectives are what the member cities of ACES want to promote for the entire population, whether young or old, local or foreign, disabled or not.

To promote these objectives, ACES awards each year the title ›European Capital of Sports‹ to one city in Europe.

So far the following cities have received the award:

    2001: Madrid
    2002: Stockholm
    2003: Alicante
    2004: Glasgow
    2005: Rotterdam
    2006: Copenhagen
    2007: Stuttgart
    2008: Warsaw
    2009: Milan
    2010: Dublin

    Application criteria
Each year, the award is given to either a city with a population of at least 500,000 or to a state capital. The distinction is awarded to a city that has proven its commitment to promoting sports along the lines of the five objec-tives mentioned above and that also practises an innovative municipal sports policy. A city can not apply for the award within four years of another city in the same state having received the award (e.g. no German city may be given the award before 2012.)

Reading the org chart, my cynical side suspects it's a bit of a wheeze to pay for various Mayors to enjoy fully expensed trips around Europe, but I'm surely mistaken.

The Statutes mention fees to be paid by "founder members":
Every municipality of the cities awarded as “European Capital of Sport” or “European City of Sport” can be considered as founder member, with the prerogatives specified in this Statute, by the payment of a “una tantum” membership of 50.000 euros.

...although I'm not sure what the full fees structure is.

I can't find any annual accounts on the site, but I'm sure it's all in the public interest.

    * this definitely rules me out for ambassador

"Milan became the 2009 European capital of sport on 28 February, taking over from Warsaw. The city has organised 40 sporting events during the year which include three world championships; canoeing, amateur boxing and baseball. It is also hosting the European gymnastic championships. From 6-13 September the city will hold the Homeless World Cup championships (HWC) international football tournament, involving 64 nations and 700 footballers." ...yeah well we've got the Gaa and a bit of horse racing.

We should learn from the Italians and introduce that noble sport of prostitute racing.

www.dublinsport.ie is now on a standalone page.
There's a calendar of upcoming events that clubs/organisations can email with details of their events.
There will be pictures of different events that will take place.

Funny you should mention about the Kelloggs cycling Criterium because as part of the annual Tour of Ireland, one of the legs will take place in Dublin City Centre. Keep an eye on www.dublinsport.ie or www.cyclingireland.ie

Nothing intelligent to say? Then dont say it at all.

Dublin City Council have had so much bad press over their 30kmh speed limit in Dublin. Now when they try and promote sport and active living they get smart ass remarks. Why not row in behind them and support the events.

If Dublin City Council is offended, then I'm truly sorry. I wish the new sports ambassador all the best in ambassading sport in Dublin.

There is not a huge amount there that was not happening anyway - GAA club final - great of dublin city council to organise that one, I wonder did they have to go on a "fact finding mission" with the other "vice presidents" to a best in class neutral venue like Barbados to figure out that one!

It is just our turn to host the jollies for the civil serpents from the other countries, our lot will get their chance next year.

I wrote this tongue in cheek, didn't realise they were actually not going to do anything and simply list the Gaa and rugby on a website that probably cost a half a million. maddening. http://www.businessandleadership.com/technology/news/article/19548/technology/cost-of-running-government-websites-varies-considerably

I don't know what's planned to mark the year of Dublin as European Capital of Sport, but I remember when it was European Capital of Culture, and nothing much was organised to mark it. There seemed to be an attitude that Dublin was inherently a cultural place, so it could continue as usual. I've noticed in the past a similar tendency to overestimate our prowess at sport, so it wouldn't surprise me if business as usual is regarded as adequate.

haha. I was trying to find out what sport is on this weekend as I'm dying to try out a new lens on the camera (like last weekend's cyclocross).

So I went to the official site of the Capital of Sport 2010... www.dublinsport.ie and there is no sport on it bar a Dublin football match for the next two weeks.

I thought I'd check out their advertised facebook site. "dublin sport" on facebook. Rather aptly under their 'Events' tab it reads "Dublin Sport does not have any forthcoming events."

    What an utter sham.

Anyone any good free sports events I can catch?

I don't even want to know what you've got to google / be into to know that reference. But very funny!
